6/19 is now “Rey Mysterio Day” in San Diego

When it’s all said and done, the master of the 619 may go down as the greatest cruiserweight to ever fly off the top ropes, and it seems that Rey Mysterio’s hometown would like to honor him for all of his accomplishments over his career.

San Diego City Councilmember David Alvarez declared earlier Monday morning that June 19 will now be known as “Rey Mysterio Day,” with the Lucha legend being honored in a celebration for his career and work in the community. The official statement can be seen below.

Oscar Gutierrez, otherwise known as Rey Mysterio, is a professional wrestler, born and raised in South San Diego. Widely regarded as the greatest cruiserweight wrestler of all time, he’s known for his high-flying Lucha Libre wrestling style and named his signature move ‘619’ (he is appropriately honored on June 19). Mysterio has won numerous wrestling championships and also continues to give back to the San Diego community by organizing and participating in various charity events.

While 2018 didn’t exactly start out the way Mysterio expected, the Ultimate Underdog has become one of the biggest free agents on the market, almost reinvigorating his career.

2018 seems to be the year of Mysterio.
