SAN JOSE, Calif. – Strikeforce’s return to its home base resulted in its largest attendance of its past four “Arena Series” shows.

Saturday’s “Strikeforce: Diaz vs. Cyborg” event took place at the HP Pavilion in San Jose, Calif.

The event, which aired on Showtime, scored 9,059 attendees.

Strikeforce CEO Scott Coker confirmed the total after the show. An official tally will be available from the California State Athletic Commission later this week.

The event featured two title fights. Both Strikeforce welterweight champion Nick Diaz and middleweight titleholder Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza posted successful title defenses, over Evangelista “Cyborg” Santos and Robbie Lawler, respectively. Additionally, former NFL great Herschel Walker improved to 2-0 just a couple months shy of his 49th birthday.

Strikeforce, a San Jose-based promotion that previously hosted the majority of its shows at the HP Pavilion, headed to the venue for the first time since October. That show, which was headlined by a Diaz vs. K.J. Noons title fight, drew 7,559 attendees.

Strikeforce hasn’t reached a five-figure attendance mark since this past June, when the highly anticipated “Strikeforce: Fedor vs. Werdum” event drew 11,757 attendees. The organization, which drew a promotional record 16,326 in 2008, has crossed the 10,000-attendee barrier just once in its past eight “Arena Series” shows.

Saturday’s show was attended by many notables, most from the San Jose area. They included Strikeforce champ Gilbert Melendez, UFC champ Cain Velasquez, Miesha Tate, Luke Rockhold, Josh Thomson and others.
