Abraham Washington Released By WWE, Goes On Twitter Rant

WWE announced they have come to terms on the release of A.W. (a/k/a Abraham Washington) as of August 10, 2012, weeks after the boisterous personality made a crass remark on a live program. Upon learning of the news, A.W. went on a multi-post Twitter diatribe ripping the sports-entertainment organization. He stated, “AWPromotions is no more ladies and gentlemen. Thank you for your support and hate, it’s been a great run. Now I get to do me which isn’t PG!

“@TitusONeilWWE & @DarrenYoungWWE thank you for allowing me to speak on your behalf. You guys are the best and I’m glad to call u my friends!

“I’ve offended the wrong people that taught me how to have ATTITUDE It was the #WWE that made me bold and now it has turned it’s back on me

“Let this be a lesson to up and coming talent in the WWE don’t try and be great like the Rock or Stone Cold. WWE isn’t the same…

“Just be normal shut up and be a yes man so you can collect your check and feel like your special. #SELLOUTS!!

“I remember a time when the WWE didn’t care about breaking the mold but now everyone is so afraid of their own shadow. #RemeberTheFans

“Thanks to the fans who showed me support over the whole Kobe thing and to those I upset I apologize again. Remember It’s entertainment folks.”

A.W. then indicates that his termination is tied to WWE chief Vince McMahon’s wife Linda’s pursuit of a United States Senate seat in Connecticut, which many have speculated has led the sports-entertainment organization to steer clear of any controversial matters as to not attract negative press to the campaign.

“I really do hope Linda wins that election because If not then all of this BS has been for nothing. #GoLinda!!” he wrote.

During a live WWE Raw broadcast on July 30, 2012, A.W. made a crass joke referencing NBA player Kobe Bryant’s sexual assault case in 2003 and 2004. As client Titus O’Neil tangled with Kofi Kingston in a singles match, A.W. yelled from ringside, “Titus O’Neil is like Kobe Bryant at a hotel in Colorado hotel room. He’s unstoppable!!” When Raw returned from commercial break following the bout, WWE apologized on-air via announcer Michael Cole and A.W. subsequently issued an apology via Twitter, noting that “there was no malicious intent behind the joke.” After Raw, WWE issued an official apology via TMZ.com stating that they had “taken appropriate action in the matter.”

Prior to joining the main roster this spring, A.W. was a fixture on the final episodes of ECW on Syfy with an in-ring interview segment called “The Abraham Washington Show.” He had been under contract to WWE since 2009, where he also performed for developmental promotion Florida Championship Wrestling.

Washington noted on Twitter that he would doing stand-up comedy going forward, remarking, “If you think that Kobe joke was bad wait till you hear my Vince jokes.”

    Soft as butter.

@ Chris. You got some serious issues bro…

  • SuperCena < Divorce Papers

Hmmm, they didn’t use his real name. I think this is a work.

  • Pete

He was just doing his job as a heel. Getting heat from the crowd is what he is supposed to do.

  • Pete

He was just doing his job as a heel. Getting heat from the crowd is what he is supposed to do.

  • k91xxx

he would have he would have not got fired racist a** WWE

  • yofits

    AW was a great character.
    He will be missed.

I agree with his tweet: “Let this be a lesson to up and coming talent in the WWE don’t try and be great like the Rock or Stone Cold. WWE isn’t the same…”

    VINCE McMAHON IS RACIST!

  • Chris

    Heh…rape is funny.

Actually, for some laughs, me and my buddies plan and kidnapping a girl, taking to a field and raping her for hours…just for laughs.

  • angel z

thats why wwe products sucks so bad. this will not go unnoticed

  • StocktonJoe

@Ant – you nailed it. AW brought nothing to the table. Austin, Rock, DX, and the list goes on – they got away with it. They didn’t get away with it because of the “attitude era.” They got away with it because night after night they put asses in seats. AW’s character was simply annoying. Maybe that was his fault. Maybe that’s the way his character was conceived and written. AW was forgetable. And expendable.

  • Tony A

I wonder if tensi is next

  • paul

i didnt even notice the comment until the posts on here,i had to replay the match several times before i heard it,AW needs some acting lessions

  • DFlo

That Kobe ‘joke’ wasn’t even funny. It was just crass, and even worse than that, it was about 8yrs out of date. He should know his remarks weren’t cutting edge. They were old and stupid.

  • ant

First of all, big deal. He brought nothing to the table. Second, I have little tolerance for stupidity. If the PG Era had SUDDENLY HAPPENED, then OK, but this is something that has been in place for years. How in the bloody name of hell does he not know that rape jokes are off limits? How? My cat knows, and he doesn’t even like wrestling. It’s like he told a Nazi joke, then went “what? that’s not cool?”.

He can’t blame being an idiot on anyone but himself.

  • The Irishbulldog

Good!! i never liked him at all. He’s rather annoying and an idiot of all kinds. I would rather have Jimmy Hart manage the Prime Time Players than that guy. I mean really….#SOMEONECALLMYMOMMA!!

  • Jon

Im kinda glad….I was gettin AW confused with AJ….and the AA….everyone knows the alphabet starts AB…….geeze!

  • Jake

A.W is like a white woman in a Colorado motel, totally screwed

  • The Real CM Punks Promo

Guys it has NOTHING to do with the Kobe joke. it’s because he endorsed linda’s campaign via twitter. Vince got mad that a heel was endorsing his wife in character. I live in CT and Linda caught a lot of flack for it in the papers. Vince blew his stack and walla. No more AWP. Check his twitter. It’s all there.

  • Logan

He was doing his job…..being a heel. WTF WWE

  • Jim

Just when I was beginning to like AW this happens. Not surprised though PC world gone mad again. Judging by his tweets a lot of hypocrisy in WWE management with advice being given that’s likely to make you fail rather than succeed.

  • d

Could of just suspended him its similar to the Jericho issue in it was over blown

  • fivogoeswest

Lol how can WWE release aw when he’s just a “talent promoter”?

  • jeff

This would never have happened if it was pg14

  • LSC

So AW gets released for making a Kobe Bryant joke…one person directed too…Yet Tensai is kept on and he offends Asian people? Seems legit…

  • PinkSinCara

Cool. Now can someone get Titus to stop barking?

  • Bill

I’m sure the Linda comments from before had something to do with it, too.

  • Jimbotron

Linda McMahon getting into politics continues to be one of the worst things to happen to WWE. Can’t wait for Vince and Linda to disappear so HHH and Steph can take over.

  • RPM

i like prime time playas too bad they won’t ever hold the titles now

  • The Awesome One

NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO NO!!!!

  • Alan Wake

    Kobe Bryant got AW fired!

  • Dan

Him being released is not overall surprising. What’s surprising is that it a) didn’t happen immediately if the WWE are trying to cover their own backs and b) That he remained on TV for the rest of his tenure.

  • Robinson

Lol just for making abkobe joke that’s awesome. Like the media would have been mad BC he made a joke about a supposed rapist lol.

  • Cropsy

that sucks his comment was the funniest thing I’d heard on WWE since I can’t remember when. But as Prince has stated it’s not a shocker he got the boot. RIP AW

  • Pissed Off Fan =(

That’s complete BS that they fired AW!

  • Prince

I think everyone saw this coming. He’s no big loss. What he said was of course overblown though. He’s gotta know that doesn’t fly in the WWE though. You are fired if you bring them any kind of PR hit.

  • 1919dpg

i don’t get what was so horrible about the reference in the first place. yeh, it was a bit distasteful but who cares, he’s a heel anyway.

nobody would remember if they hadn’t made such a big deal about it.

  • xXx

    well la-dee-da..
