Andrade “Cien” Almas undergoes a name change on SmackDown Live

Andrade vs Rey Mysterio - SmackDown Live

Andrade Almas took on Rey Mysterio on tonight’s episode of SmackDown Live, hoping to pick up another big win against the legendary luchador.

As the match began, the WWE Universe noticed that something was different, however. As the former NXT Champion made his way down the ramp, along with Zelina Vega, his titantron displayed only “Andrade.” Throughout the night, the commentary team only referred to el Idolo as Andrade, verifying that the WWE has indeed dropped the “Cien” Almas part of his name.

Andrade joins a list of other superstars who have had their names shortened since arriving on the main roster, including Elias and Rusev.

  • Keith Learmonth

At least with Sheamus, they took away his name before he was on the main roster.

It’s a lot stranger when they take the name away from someone who has been using it for weeks on TV.

  • Wicka Steve

Alexander Rusev and Elias Sampson. Oh, and it was Antonio Cesaro and Sheamus O’Shaunessy.

  • EVH

i dont even remember Elias’ or Rusev’s last names!

My guess is that it is a Mexican thing. Don’t forget they have the day of the dead celebration, so they are a very spiritual based people. My guess would be that it is that the idea was connected to that in some way.

Don’t forget even Rey Mysterio’s name is one of those that translates into something specific in English (Mystery King).

While the hundred souls name is a WWE creation, you can bet it was created to fit that Lucha style of naming people.

  • CC

Thanks for that. I was starting to think I had imagined that one or mixed him up with someone else.

I will say though that this name shortening gimmick is a pretty standard tactic with WWE though, so not sure why anyone is surprised they have done it again.

  • Tony Bologna

I never understood the Cien Almas thing. Hundred Souls. What? Was he supposed to be as powerful as 100 wrestlers? Was he supposed to have been reincarnated 100 times? Why are you calling someone Hundred Souls if it has nothing to do with his gimmick? I don’t know if they ever talked about it in NXT, but I know since he was on Smackdown they never addressed it.

  • Will Henderson

yes, Apollo Crews’ temporay rename was a knee jerk reaction to the Parkland, FL Marjory Douglas Stoneman High School shooting aka the 2018 Valentines Day Massacre in Parkland, FL. as the last name of the shooter was Cruz (spelled in a Latin way instead of the English way).

  • what?

    Tonight match was absolutely awesome

  • BB

Too bad. I always thought Andrade “Cien” Almas had a good ring to it.

  • Killswitch

I think that may have been due to the recent shooter at the time resembling a similar name.

Sometimes name shortening works, some times it doesn’t.
If you look at the current roster, there are quite a lot of people that it has happened to.
Elias and Rusev as mentioned. Charlotte rarely uses her surname anymore although she is still listed under that name. Then you have Big E, Cesaro, Sheamus, Harper, Rowan, Tamina & Natalya.
They also did exactly the same thing with Neville.

I also seem to remember them doing it with Apollo Crews a while back then changing their mind a few weeks later.
