Austin Aries update; No longer under contract?

As we noted last night, after losing his Impact World Championship to Johnny Impact at Bound for Glory 2018, Austin Aries seemed to walk away from the company.

Immediately after getting pinned, Aries got up, effectively no selling the finish of the match, followed by a heated exchange between himself and Don Callis. Aries then flipped off Callis, the crowd, and everyone ringside while walking away, leaving Moose and Killer Kross as well.

Since then, speculation has run rampant regarding A Double’s position with Impact Wrestling. It was unclear whether the former champion had just left for good or if it was all part of the storyline between him and Johnny Impact, a storyline that had gotten incredibly heated, culminating in less of a wrestling match and more of a brawl at Bound for Glory.

Prior to the bout, Aries took some intense shots at Taya Valkyrie, Johnny Impact’s wife, on Twitter, which led to a brawl at Impact Wrestling’s 2018 Hall of Fame.

On the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez said that Aries has essentially, “gone home.” According to Alvarez, Aries won’t be attending tapings taking place today or tomorrow, meaning he won’t show up on TV for possibly a few months. Reportedly, Aries hasn’t been fired, which could mean that this is a work meant to get fans and news sites talking.

However, it’s now being reported that Aries is no longer under contract with Impact Wrestling.

According to Petey Williams, who discussed the incident on the latest episode of his podcast.

Austin Aries’ contract is done. That match was his last one under contract with Impact.

Williams apparently produced the title bout between Aries and Johnny Impact.

What do you think about the situation? Is it all a work, or has Austin Aries truly left Impact Wrestling?

I’m pretty sure it was reported a few months ago that his problems there were pretty much entirely his fault. WWE deliberately held him below where he thought he should be to see how he’d handle it, due to his reputation, and he blew it.

Aries always said he was working without a contract but on an agreement

If this is all genuine, it does make you start to think if his problems in WWE were of his own making.

i wonder if the canned “his contract is done” comment from Petety is the company trying to hide the fact the may had fired him for unprofessional conduct from his recent fat shaming coming towards Taya Valkyrie and the fight at Abyss’ Hall of Fame Induction ceremony and the no selling “starship pain” last night that would be the last straw.

When Punk did his pipebomb he gave a peek behind the inner workings of WWE as far as who runs the place etc but at not time did it open it up as “fake”. He did not no-sell anything

This though is dreadful booking if it is indeed all storyline.

  • Kayfabe_Is_Dead

Agreed. It can’t be both a storyline and a shoot at the same time, making everyone look bad on the way out.

  • Greg Bush

I had the same thought. This is terrible booking if it’s Impact’s attempt to swerve the fans. With Don Callis comparing Morrison and Aries to Bret and HBK during the match, it leads me to think it’s a work, which is really sad.

The problem is, if it is a work, it is the worst kind.
When someone walks out and gives people the finger etc, that is fine. But to take a pin and then no sell it after just says “hey guys, this is all fake”. It does Impact (both the company and the man) no favours.
