The Appleton Post Crescent interviewed Brodus Clay, who was promoting Tuesday’s SmackDown tapings from the Resch Center in Green Bay, WI. Here are some highlights.
His gimmick as the Funkasaurus as opposed to a monster: “To be honest, that’s more of who I am. I never was the silent angry type. I’ve always had a big mouth. I’ve always been loud. Some people would say obnoxious, other people say entertaining, charming, it just depends on who you’re around. This is just more of who I am. … It’s hard to be angry all the time I think.”
Which brand – Raw or SmackDown – he prefers: “When it comes to competing, I just think everyone here is a professional. Probably the guy I was most excited to get a chance to be in the ring with was Big Show. For me, that was a career highlight even though it didn’t really go the way I wanted it to. I was a little banged up, but he was always one of the guys who was a measuring stick in terms of who I wanted to be, so that was a tremendous thrill for me. At the same time, I was nervous because he’s the Big Show (laughs). Both brands are their own world and they’re very different, yet the same. Do I have a favorite one? I just like being used in either one. They’re both great in their own way. Blue is more of my favorite color than red, but it doesn’t really matter to me.”
Difference between his current WWE career and being on the road with Snoop Dogg as his bodyguard: “Honestly, the biggest thing is that I’m the focus. I’m not focused on somebody else’s well-being and watching somebody else. I’m basically taking care of myself and promoting myself, which is cool. You’re basically your own boss. … It’s a lot more freedom, a lot more responsibility. I think whenever you’re policing yourself, it’s always a lot tougher because if you’re watching somebody else they’ll tell you exactly what they want, but sometimes it’s hard to tell yourself what you want. I like the freedom (with WWE) and the opportunity for individual achievement is obviously a tremendous leap and far more important.”
