Is Chris Benoit Featured In The New WWE Encyclopedia? – Author Comments

WWE has attempted to distance themselves from Chris Benoit since his career and life ended in a murder–suicide on June 24, 2007. With the exception of his results and listings in’s title history (though summaries of his title reigns have been removed), and select content published when he was alive, he is generally not acknowledged by the sports entertainment organization. All mentions of Benoit have been removed from archived footage broadcast on WWE Classics On Demand whenever possible. Matches and other footage involving Benoit have appeared very sparingly on new video releases. Benoit was, however, listed in the first WWE Encyclopedia volume released in 2009, where his wrestling career up to where he lost the World Heavyweight Championship to Randy Orton in 2004 is detailed, along with title history. A second volume is scheduled for release this September and author Kevin Sullivan confirmed that Benoit is once again listed.

When asked via Twitter whether the new edition will have a Benoit section, Sullivan responded, “Yes, he does.”

Vince McMahon stated during a 2009 interview with WWE Magazine for “The Untold History of the WWE” issue that it is okay to acknowledge Benoit within a historical context but not in a promotional manner.

“It’s not right to pretend he didn’t exist,” he said when asked whether Benoit’s history can be acknowledged by WWE. “It’s one thing to include him as part of a historical perspective, which I believe is okay, and it’s another thing to promote him, which is not okay.

“The situation is very similar to that of O.J. Simpson—despite his controversy, O.J. was still a part of the NFL scene. You can’t deny that he existed.”

Over a three-day period ending on June 24, 2007. Benoit killed his wife, Nancy Benoit, strangled his seven-year-old son, Daniel, and subsequently committed suicide by hanging.

@Maxwell Beniot was the only Wrestler who wanted to Take Chairshots to the Head each and every night. His Finisher was a Diving Headbutt. Now Unless every Wrestler has a Diving Headbutt as their finisher Ur right and I’m wrong but thats Not the case.

I will never forgive the WWE for listing the main event of Wrestlemania XX as the Undertaker vs Kane. Talk about a slap in the face…

At Roth Keahi, trust me there are other superstars who have had concussions and just as much and just as bad as his..theres no excuse for it. What if a murderer said to a judge, I killed them because ive been playing hockey for year, and from all the concussions caused me to snap…what do you think, is he going to be seen as a murderer and a horrible person or as the hockey player he was?

I did it for the rock

  • Roth Keahi

The thing that so many fail to acknowledge is that the condition that Benoit was in that pushed him to the edge was actually caused by his dedication to the industry and to the fans. The insane amount of concussions he had over the years deteriorated his brain and sent him into a state of dementia. Do I condone what he did? Of course not. Do I think that he should never, ever be mentioned again? Hell no. The man was a legend in the business and should be remembered as such.

Benoit is a no good piece of shit, anyone still riding his cock deserves to die!

Alright! It’s about time WWE stopped forgetting his history. As far as I will choose to remember, Benoit was a talented wrestler with great moments over the years. Although we must learn from everything in life, in this case the events from 2007 concerning Benoit, it is best to remember the good times & forget the bad.

Chris Benoit, was a great wrestler, but when he killed that little boy and his wife, than to take his own life was too much. Once that happens, you forget that he was good talent. Truth is you can have good talent on the roster, you can get new talent, tommorrow, after tomorrow, years from now. There where always be another talent to replace the crippler crossface, the flying headbutt, and many other wrestling moves Benoit was know for doing so well, but there will NEVER be another Nancy, or another Little Daniel. I hate the fact that he did that because, there were other answers, and ways to solve any problems.

Chris Benoit was a great wrestler however I still am not believing the Facts because the police didn’t handle the situation right and they haven’t released any information except how they died. I’m happy Vince includes him in the encyclopedia but I really want to see him in the HOF.

    @misfit del rio
ah my bad thanks for correcting me

  • misfit del rio

@ scooter different Kevin Sullivan, in the first entry, they just had a quick little paragraph on Chris, mainly that he was a top performer and that he always remained in the title picture. Such a shame. Rip, Nancy and Daniel.
