Cruiserweight Championship match announced for WWE Royal Rumble

During tonight’s 205 Live 2018 recap show, it was revealed that Buddy Murphy would be defending the Cruiserweight Championship at WWE Royal Rumble.

With Mustafa Ali officially joining SmackDown Live, it seems that he’s out of the picture now. 205 Live General Manager Drake Maverick announced tonight that there will be three qualifying matches over the next two weeks.

  • Kalisto vs Lio Rush
  • Drew Gulak vs Akira Tozawa
  • Cedric Alexander vs Hideo Itami

The first two matches will take place on the January 2nd episode of 205 Live, while Alexander and Itami will face off on the 9th. All three victors will be added to the championship bout, as Buddy Murphy will defend his title in a Fatal-4-Way match at the Royal Rumble.

If he’s the new big bad, then they don’t want him to be the guy to take the belt from Murphy.

They’ll have a face take it from Murphy, then Mike can take it from him. Right now, Kanellis would have to be booked to lose, which would defeat the purpose.

Wheres Mike Kanellis? Thought he was being brought in as the new big bad.

This division was so poorly booked until the last few months that all the originals need heavy character development to re-establish themselves.

    Murphy vs Itami… yes please

I would guess it will be one heel and two face wins to even it out, or could be three faces I guess. With Murphy being heel, it would not be great to have two heels win here.
Ideally it would not feature Alexander as he has been involved in the title picture way too long for somebody with a lack of personality.
Would be cool for Itami to finally have a decent shot, so if he is in it, that would potentially mean Tozawa and Kalisto to even it out.

Should have put TJP there instead
