Home » TNA News » Hulk Hogan Talks About His Relationship with Vince McMahon, John Cena’s Character, TNA Obstacles

- Hulk Hogan recently spoke with STLtoday.com. Here are some highlights from the interview:

Early obstacles with TNA:
“Communication was tough. The creative people were kind of a wild card. It was a situation where we all sat in a meetings and agree on creative directions. … We would agree on stuff, then I would sit back and watch the show and it was completely different than what we talked about earlier in the production meetings. … Those were the biggest hurdles I had in the beginning was why this perfect little unit wasn’t functioning as planned. The biggest obstacle was keeping people from going into business for themselves.”

His relationship with Vince McMahon:
“On a personal level we are fine. Business is business with Vince. At the end of the day, I’m not working there. Basically, Vince does what’s best for business for him. … On a personal level, Vince will give you the shirt off his back and I know that.”

Comparing his babyface character to John Cena’s:
“I don’t think you can compare the two. Everyone has their time and their moment, and the business changes on a daily basis. What we’re talking about today might not be relevant a week from now.

“The John Cena I watch on TV, and know, started out being a Hulkamaniac when he was a kid. He said he fell in love with the wrestling business and had certain favorites and at the end of the day, simply because he is such a great performer in the ring and that he has been around so long. The last time I was in the WWE, he was just starting, which was about 10 years ago. It’s taken that long to develop his character — for him to be the man — for him to be one of the biggest leaders of all time of this business. And whether the fans boo him or whether the fans cheers for him, at the end of the day, they are loyal to him because he is a constant. They know he will deliver. He is going to always be there, and he is going to outperform anybody else around.

“I think there is a lot of respect involved and whether (the fans) like him or hate him, they believe in him and respect him.”

  • angel

cena is stale and crap. no thanks

  • jon

I agree cena n orton gets complain on but hey WWE is entertainment the writers make cena n orton who they are but funny to admit Y2j is the only wwe wrestler I know who writes his own scripts n has share his ideas n scripts with vince for years. cena came in the wwe with thuganomics years later which is the past 6 years he is this cena who loves the fans because key word WWE is PG still not TV14 or TVMA anymore.

  • Kristopher Robinson

    Your a idiot lol

  • Kristopher Robinson

He’s had the same character for the lay 6 years, it didn’t not take him 10 years to develop anything. He’s hasn’t changed for a very long time.

  • Kristopher Robinson

    People do complain about Orton…..

  • J-SMOOTH

Ok Dena did say he would never turn heel because it would disappoint his and wwe feels if he did they would get too much grief from parents because his fan base 2-11 year olds. This was stated on wwe.com and even on wrestling-edge.com and I agree john Dena did start out as a heel and that did make him but his refusal to go back to being a heel is what’s breaking him with older fans

  • millerj265

You live just outside of reality don’t you.

  • Ray Myer

It’s not the writers that refuse to turn heel. It’s Cena. And no, I don’t give a damn about his contributions outside the ring. I make my own in life but I don’t parade around bragging about it for credibility. Lol. It’s nothing but a circus act for him. It’s sad you believe in all that though. It really is.

  • JohnCena33

It is sad that you don’t respect him as a person. He has done what, granted 300 make a wishes. by disrespecting him as a person, you are disrespecting those 300 dying children. By the way, WWE is scripted, blame the writers, not Cena for all of Cena’s in ring work.

  • JohnCena33

You do realize Cena doesn’t write the show, right? It is creative, not Cena. Cena does the best job that he can. It is funny how people complain about Cena, but not Randy Boring Orton.

  • millerj265

So when did he ever say or act as if he was better then any of the men you mentioned above? And when did he ever state he’s above turning heel? Now im not arguing with you, in fact id agree with you if he has in fact said the things you stated above. Also can you show me say idk video or photographic evidence of cena holding a gun to your head forcing you to watch the ppvs he was headlining or the raws he was going to undoubtingly be the centerpiece of? Also do you have video or photographic proof of him doing the same to Vince McMahon, because idk if your aware of this but no matter how much john wants to be the top guy in the wwe it wouldn’t happen unless vince allowed it, so obviously john must be threatening his life constantly since its apparently johns choice to be the guy and to win 99% of his matches. Also you must not be aware of johns heel run throughout late 02 to late 03, in fact that heel run is what put him on the map and got him noticed. And if your honestly dumb enough to think that if vince told john he was going heel that john wouldn’t do it then dumb doesn’t actually begin to describe whats wrong with your mental capabilities. If vince said hey john today I want you to go out to the ring and light yourself on fire for the fans john would say, how long do you need me to burn for vince. weather you like him or not, which you obviously don’t and that’s fine that’s more then your right not to. The fact remains the same, johns a blue collar guy and like him or not, respect him or not he loves wresting and he loves all the things the wwe asks him to do to represent there company, and when the day comes where they say john we no longer need you as the top guy he would say okay then what other role can I take to help the company and he would do it with a smile.

Dude for real, y’all are losers that hate on a scripted program. Cena is the BEST for business! He’s not the best in the ring or mic by far but his willingness to do anything for the WWE is best for WWE. Orton and other vets follow the same motto, fight for what u believe in and stay loyal. That’s why they’re champions and others are flash in the pan wrestlers like Bryan. Great talent but u can tell he believes he’s more than what he is…I don’t like Cena as a wrestler/performer but I respect him as a man for his charity work and constant grind. F%©K what y’all thought! Peace

  • Ray Myer

Oh, and, you self-righteous marks can downvote all you want. Your not saving the world by preaching righteousness and praising someone who couldn’t care less if you wiped his ass. :D

  • Ray Myer

Uh. I hate Cena. I do not respect him. I do not appreciate him as a person or a wrestler. Anyone that believes his or herself to be above the Austins, Rocks, HBKs AND Triple Hs and above a heel turn because ‘that’s not who he is’ screams narcisisstic and I have no respect for someone that has caused me to waste my money on PPVs and minutes of my life by tuning into RAW to watch the same old Super-Cena bullshit.

  • millerj265

So because he doesn’t entertain you specifically, he has failed as a performer. Good to know that your the be all end all on the subject of what’s entertaining. In fact the nxt time I watch a match or im deciding on weather or not to order a ppv ill make sure to ask you if you think its entertaining or not that way I wont have to worry about wasting my time and failing.

  • CC

well he has worked so hard and not entertained me, so like you, he fails

  • CC

piss off. what does class have anything to do with liking or respecting Cena. I dont care how much he supposedly does. he is a guy who does not deserve to constantly pushed over more talented wrestlers. yeah he has done some stuff, but am sure there are better wrestlers who would have done the same things had they not been held down just so super cena can be pushed to the moon.
the person who has no class is you

  • ANTSFSOLDIER

Wow what a bunch of jerk knocking someone whos given so much to the wwe and worked so hard for your entertainment

  • ANTSFSOLDIER

    Then you have no class

  • ANTSFSOLDIER

    So are you

  • Juany

    outperform ??
    Hogan is senil

  • CC

“I think there is a lot of respect involved and whether (the fans) like him or hate him, they believe in him and respect him.”

Believe in and respect him? No.

  • Rashaan Butler

Me too. One of the many reasons I hope AJ Styles wins the BFG Series and beats Ray at Bound For Glory 2013.

  • Kristopher Robinson

Highly agree! Technical wrestling in this business is so rare that it is actually better to watch than what goes on every single day.

  • ANTSFSOLDIER

I personally am a fan of the mixture of technical/high flying wrestling like a cm punk/rey mysterio match or a daniel bryan/dolph ziggler match

  • CC

The comment about technical wrestling is bull. I’d rather watch technical guys than most of the “car crash” “explosion” type wrestling Bully Ray seems to love.
