The show began with an ambulance driving into the arena. Ryback emerged from it. They showed some pictures from Extreme Rules. Ryback said that there was no decision in his match at Extreme Rules. Clips showed that John Cena refused to be put in the ambulance after the match. Ryback stood on top of the ambulance for the promo and said he didn’t care what the stupid people (the fans) thought about him. He proposed an Ambulance Match against John Cena at Payback. He said he’ll be the one to put Cena into the back of the ambulance. Ryback called the fans fat, pathetic and weak (said weak a few times). He said he had nothing in common with the fans. He mentioned the fans worshiped Cena and that Cena was their hero. “Absolutely pathetic!” He really does like to enunciate words doesn’t he? He said that at Payback he’ll beat Cena in the Ambulance Match and he’ll take Cena to the morgue. The fans will be there with Cena too. “Ryback Rules” ended the promo.
Analysis: That was one of his better promos. I think he might have gone too strong in terms of insulting the fans, but obviously he did that to make sure that he got booed during the whole promo. I’ve never been a huge fan of an Ambulance Match. They aren’t that exciting. However, it’s better than a regular match for them and they need a stipulation, so it works based off of what happened at Extreme Rules.
The announcers Michael Cole, Jerry Lawler and John Bradshaw Layfield welcomed us to the show. The Ambulance Match at Payback is official.
Later on Raw we’ll meet Paul Heyman’s newest client. Lots of rumors for that. The Miz and Chris Jericho against Wade Barrett and Fandango is next. Seven minutes into Raw with the first commercial. That’s rare.

Back from break, Cole plugged Sonic food as fans at ringside were drinking from Sonic cups. WWE – they like sponsors. And money.
Wade Barrett & Fandango (w/Summer Rae) vs. The Miz & Chris Jericho
Barrett has new theme music again. Fandango was aggressive against Jericho by whipping him hard into the ropes. Road Dogg was talking on the WWE App and they actually played some of that audio. Why would I not watch a match so I can watch a promo? I still don’t understand this logic. Fandango tagged in Barrett, but it didn’t look like Barrett was thrilled with the tag. Jericho rolled out to the floor as they went to break.
Analysis: Two commercials in the first 18 minutes? There have been many episodes of Raw where they go 20 minutes without a break.

Barrett had Miz in a headlock as we returned from break with Fandango standing outside the ring. Miz with a boot to the face. Fandango pronounced his name on the microphone and then the music started as he danced with Summer Rae. The match was still going on. Barrett was yelling at Fandango about his dancing. Jericho tagged in and hit a chop off the top rope. Bulldog by Jericho followed by the Lionsault. Codebreaker by Jericho on Barrett. Miz tagged in to deliver the Figure Four Leglock and he won the match. The match went about eight minutes. Fandango was still dancing with Summer Rae in front of the announce table.
Winners: The Miz & Chris Jericho
Post match, Miz and Jericho walked up to Fandango. He took off through the crowd while Summer Rae was out there by herself. Pretty sure Fandango ran over somebody when he was running into the crowd. Jericho extended his hand for a dance. He spun her around and then dipped her. Jericho put his hand in her face as if to tell her to buzz off. She was mad. JBL: “I’ll console her.” Me too. Jericho left.
Analysis: * It wasn’t much of a match. They just hit some signature spots for the finish, but that was really it. It was more an angle than anything. What’s the angle? That Fandango apparently doesn’t care about wrestling. All he wants to do is dance. Is this really all we’re going to get with this character? It will get old fast.

Raw’s Managing Supervisor Vickie Guerrero was on the stage as the crowd booed her. Vickie said we could vote for Jack Swagger’s opponent later in the show. The choices are The Great Khali, R-Truth or Randy Orton. Of course Orton will win. They lack creativity in these polls.
In the locker room, Daniel Bryan realized they’re not the tag team champions anymore. Kane told him to relax. Bryan said The Shield took them to the woodshed. Kane said he’s confident and Daniel should be too. They can’t show weakness. Bryan took offense with that saying that he is not the weak link of the team. Kofi Kingston showed up to calm them down. Bryan said he’d see them out there. Cole said those three versus The Shield in a six man tag later.
Analysis: I doubt Bryan is going heel. I just want him to get a babyface push as a singles performer. I think he’ll thrive in that role. The six man tag should be fun later in the show.
Sheamus entered the ring for a match. They didn’t say who it was against. They went to break there.

On the Extreme Rules post show, Henry didn’t want to talk to the cameras. He said he was going home.
Titus O’Neil (w/Darren Young) vs. Sheamus
Sheamus knocked down O’Neil with a shoulder tackle early. O’Neil hit a shoulder tackle of his own. The tweets that WWE posts during Raw are terrible. While typing that, Sheamus hit his ten forearm shots to the chest of O’Neil. Sheamus threw Young into the security wall, which allowed O’Neil to deck Sheamus with a clothesline. Fallaway slam by O’Neil. Back elbow by O’Neil. He slammed down Sheamus for a two count followed by an armbar. The announcers did a good job of talking up O’Neil’s credentials as Sheamus made his comeback. Shoulder tackle and high running knee for Sheamus. O’Neil dumped him to the floor, Young grabbed the leg of Sheamus and O’Neil hit a forearm shot to the back of Sheamus to get a two count. O’Neil missed a corner charge, which led to White Noise by Sheamus. Brogue Kick by Sheamus ended the match after six minutes.
Winner: Sheamus
Analysis: *1/2 I’m actually surprised it even got six minutes. I thought it would get half of that. I’m glad that O’Neil got some offense in and that the announcers could talk about his potential because he is a solid performer if given the chance. Obviously we knew Sheamus would get the win and that’s what happened.

The social media ambassador is Kevin Jonas of the Jonas Brothers. I don’t know who that is. And I’m glad I don’t.
Paul Heyman made his entrance. No theme song. Heyman says when one of his guys beats a hero he’s the one that gets booed by the fans. He encouraged them to boo. Lawler started booing. He asked the fans what it felt like to be powerless. He said that at Extreme Rules a true “Heyman Guy” Brock Lesnar beat Triple H in a Steel Cage Match. History will tell us that his client emerged victorious with Triple H going down in history as a loser. He said Lesnar is enjoying the win while Triple H had to go home to mommy.
Heyman said that since Lesnar has fulfilled his obligations, what is Heyman going to talk about it? Heyman said that it’s time for something new and a moment we will replay ten years from now because it’s a moment in history. He introduced us to the newest Paul Heyman guy: Curtis Axel.
Who is it? Michael McGillicutty aka Joe Hennig. The son of Mr. Perfect. His theme song was a remix of the Mr. Perfect song. He still had the beard and his look was similar to what we know of him.
Heyman said that he got the same reaction that Brock Lesnar got in 2002 and that CM Punk got in 2006 on the new ECW. Heyman wondered why Curt wasn’t a main event star already. Heyman mentioned he was a third generation superstar that wanted to carve out his own niche. He said they’re giving him the name of Curt Axel in honor of his dad (Curt Hennig) and grandfather (Larry The Axe Hennig). Heyman then said the name was: Curtis Axel.
Analysis: I like the name Curtis Axel. Joe Hennig has always been a solid worker. He just needs a chance, so I welcome it.
Triple H entered the ring in his leather jacket and jeans. Not a suit guy. Axel went up to him, but Hunter said to let the adults talk. Hunter said he went to war with Lesnar and that Lesnar beat him just like Hunter did at WrestleMania. He didn’t mention Lesnar also won at Summerslam. Hunter mentioned that Lesnar limped out of the ring at Extreme Rules. Hunter said it would make him happy to beat the ever living crap out of Heyman.
Axel stood in front of Hunter. He said that the game around here has changed. He told Hunter to talk to him instead of Heyman. JBL loved his courage. Hunter decked him with a punch to the face. Hunter said he’d have a match with Axel and when he’s done kicking his ass he’s going to kick Heyman’s ass. Hunter left.
Analysis: It’s interesting that they would set up a match for later with Hunter and Axel, but I’m glad they’re doing it. We need to see some fresh faces in action. Axel fits the bill. He’s always had a lot of talent. Let’s see what he can do. There have been a lot of stories on wrestling news site about how Triple H was high on him, so now we’ll see it in the ring. I’m just glad I don’t have to type McGillicutty anymore. Axel is much easier.
It’s Alberto Del Rio vs. Big E Langston after the break.

Alberto Del Rio (w/Ricardo Rodriguez) vs. Big E Langston (w/AJ Lee)
No Dolph Ziggler. He’s not on the road yet due to his concussion. Langston missed a shoulder tackle early, so Del Rio applied the Cross Armbreaker although he couldn’t apply it perfectly. Langston slammed Del Rio into the steel post. Backbreaker by Langston. Del Rio hit a tornado DDT to begin his comeback. Del Rio hit a clothesline followed by a Backstabber. Kick to the head by Del Rio got two. Langston shoved Del Rio out of the ring when he was trying to apply the Cross Armbreaker. Del Rio came back in the ring to hit an enziguiri. He went for another hold when Lee threw Ricardo’s bucket across the ring. That distracted the ref so Langston poked him in the eye and then Langston hit the Big Ending to win the match after five minutes.
Winner: Big E Langston
Analysis: *1/2 I didn’t expect the Langston win, but I’m okay with it. It’s just weird that Del Rio would lose one night after winning a match to become the number one contender to the World Title. I remember when Drew McIntyre was actually pushed on Smackdown and he would use the thumb to the eye to set up his finisher a lot. They used to do it too much back then. This time it felt fresh because it’s been a while, so it was a crafty way for a heel to win the match. I think management is high on Langston and he’ll be on the receiving end of a big push in the near future.
They replayed the ambulance at the start of the show. Lawler joked that the last time there was an ambulance at Raw he left the arena in it. It’s nice that he can joke about his very serious heart attack from last September.
Later on Raw there’s a six man tag with Team Hell No & Kofi Kingston vs. The Shield along with Triple H vs. Curtis Axel.

Layla was in the ring for a match against AJ Lee, who is s till the number one contender for the Divas Title. They replayed her backstage fight with Kaitlyn.
AJ Lee vs. Layla
Neckbreaker by Layla and then she tried for a second one that didn’t connect very well. On the WWE App you can see the Bellas watching the match. Layla decked AJ with a series of kicks. Jumping butt attack followed by a dropkick by Layla. AJ applied the Black Widow submission maneuver out of nowhere to win the match about two minutes due to Layla tapping out.
Winner: AJ Lee
Analysis: 1/4* Good move by AJ Lee. It’s a shame that the divas only get two minutes of in-ring time on a three hour show that has a lot of filler. That’s not a new comment, but it’s worth repeating.

Cody Rhodes vs. Zack Ryder
This is pretty random. They were in the ring after the break. Ryder hit a dropkick on Rhodes. On the WWE App, Ryback was looking on. Thrilling (that’s sarcasm). Front suplex by Rhodes for two. There was a “Cody’s Mustache” chant from the crowd. One of the highlights of Raw so far. Facebuster by Ryder. Dropkick off the middle rope. Broski Boot from Ryder got a two count. Rhodes came back with the Disaster Kick, which was enough for the win. I love that move. It went two minutes.
Winner: Cody Rhodes
Analysis: 1/2* I’m glad that Rhodes won with the Disaster Kick. It’s better than the Cross Rhodes as a finisher.
Post match, Ryback marched down to the ring. Rhodes left while Ryder was still in the ring. If you were watching on the WWE App you could have predicted this or you could have when they showed Ryback watching the match. Meat Hook Clothesline by Ryback on Ryder. Powerbomb by Ryback. Shellshocked by Ryback on Ryder. Ryback threw Ryder over the top to the floor. He carried Ryder to the ambulance. He put him in. It’s like a real life burial of a jobber. The ambulance drove off.
Analysis: That was pretty anticlimactic by the end. Good heel heat for Ryback except that nobody cares about Ryder anymore. He has been buried for over a year.

The Shield entered through the crowd. Dean Ambrose walked on his own with the US Title while Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns had the Tag Titles. It used to be Reigns walking by himself while the other two were together. Does it really matter? Not really.
Ambrose said Rollins and Reigns are the Tag Team Champions. He’s the United States Champion. Ambrose said that their opponents didn’t believe. He spoke about how they injured The Rock before WrestleMania. They also took out Undertaker and we won’t be back ever again (heels lie). He also said they broke down Ryback. They were also responsible for John Cena getting hurt at Extreme Rules. Rollins said that we can all see what a cohesive unit looks like. They’re the meaning of unbreakable. “You can see the future.” Yep. That’s true. Rollins said the scary part is it’s just the beginning. Reigns said if you put somebody in front of them they take them out. They run this yard and they carry the colors to back it up (they held up their titles). Ambrose told us to believe in The Shield.
Analysis: Very good promo from the trio. Like usual, Ambrose spoke more than the others because he’s the best talker in the group. I like the confidence all of them are showing. They come off as believable characters. They’re also right when they say they are the future. I’m a believer. Just look at the banner at the top of this column.
Kane and Daniel Bryan entered the arena as The Shield stood outside the ring. The match is after a break as we close in on the top of hour three.

Kofi Kingston, Daniel Bryan & Kane vs. Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose
It started right after the break with Kingston and Ambrose. Kingston hit a monkey flip to seize control as he brought in Bryan. Running knee to the gut by Bryan. Bryan dropped an elbow on Rollins, who was the legal man. Kane with a dropkick on Rollins followed by an elbow and then he brought in Kingston. Rollins drove Kingston to the corner as The Shield worked together to isolate him in their corner. Shoulder tackle by Reigns. He kept Kingston in their corner with some power moves. Ambrose hit a running dropkick while Kingston was tied up in the ropes. I’m a fan of that spot. Nice move by Rollins as he drove Kingston face first into the middle turnbuckle. Rollins mocked the “boom” hand gesture of Kingston, which led to Kingston getting a headscissors and he brought in Bryan. The crowd was on fire for Bryan as he hit a running clothesline. Corner dropkick by Bryan on Rollins. Bryan hit his series of kicks for a two count. Bryan went to the top, but he got crotched up there. He fought of Ambrose to hit a missile dropkick for two. Great nearfall that the crowd bought into. Bryan wanted the No Lock, but Ambrose broke free and all three Shield guys were outside the ring. As the match hit 12 minutes they went to break.

Back from break, Reigns decked Kingston with a punch. Kingston was able to break free of Ambrose to bring in Bryan. With Ambrose in the Tree of Woe spot in the corner, Bryan hit a dropkick to the face for a nearfall. The heels distracted the ref to isolate Bryan after a Rollins knee to the back. Rollins tagged in to deliver a powerbomb into the turnbuckle for a two count. I love that spot. Reigns hit a huge clothesline on Bryan. A back elbow blocked a Bryan attack. The match reached 20 minutes as Ambrose did his best to keep Bryan in their corner with a back suplex. More quick tags from The Shield until Bryan broke free of Ambrose with a roundhouse kick to the head. Bryan kicked off Reigns and got Kane for the hot tag.
Kane hit a powerslam on Reigns and then he hit some clotheslines. Sidewalk slam got a two count for Kane on Reigns. Ambrose saved, so Kingston took him out with a clothesline. Kingston and Bryan hit dives outside the ring to take out Ambrose & Rollins outside the ring. That was pretty sweet. Kane hit a leaping DDT on Reigns for a two count. The crowd bought that as a nearfall. Ambrose hit a suplex on Bryan while Rollins threw Kingston into the ring post. Kane hit a big boot to Reigns. Ambrose went after Kane, but the ref got him out of the ring. Rollins hit a flying knee attack to Kane’s head and then Reigns connected on a Spear to win the match. The match went 23 minutes.
Winners: Roman Reigns, Seth Rollins & Dean Ambrose
Analysis: **** That was an excellent tag team match. The heels did a great job of isolating the babyfaces. First it was Kingston and then it was Bryan. When Kane got the hot tag it looked as if the babyface team could get the win, but they were unable to get the win because once again The Shield worked well together to win the match. I thought Rollins was especially great in this match with a lot of innovative offensive spots. He was also good at trash talking. I know Ambrose gets a lot of praise (as he should), but don’t sleep on Rollins. He’s got a lot of talent. Bryan was the star of his team. He took his beating well. When he was on offense the crowd was into everything he did. I didn’t expect a Shield loss. The story is in them looking like a cohesive unit that wins every match, so that’s what happened. Of course they did lose by DQ in that elimination tag because of Cena, but let’s not remember that one.
There was a replay of Heyman introducing Curtis Axel. Then Triple H interrupted to set up a match for later in the night.
Triple H was shown taping up his wrist. Some employee told Hunter that a doctor said he shouldn’t compete tonight. Hunter said if the doctor didn’t like it he can seek employment elsewhere.
Analysis: In other words, he’s vulnerable. If he loses he has an excuse.

Backstage, Kaitlyn was talking to Natalya about her secret admirer. Kaitlyn said she knew the phone number of her secret admirer. Cody Rhodes walked by. He asked if he had something in his Lovestache. Natalya hugged him, so Kaitlyn grabbed the phone and saw that Cody was posting pics of himself on the internet. Kaitlyn said she was glad it wasn’t him.
Analysis: This angle is painfully bad. I don’t know what the payoff will be. I just hope we get to see it soon.
Jack Swagger made his entrance with Zeb Colter. Cole said that over 150,000 votes on the WWE App about Jack Swagger’s opponent. Randy Orton got 72% of the vote, Khali got 19% of the vote and R-Truth got 9% of the vote. Orton made his entrance as they went to break.
Analysis: People voted for Khali and Truth? I’m shocked they combined to get 28% of the vote. Why couldn’t they just announce Orton vs. Swagger? Oh right it’s because they wanted to annoy us by mentioning the App 50 times. Thanks for that.

Randy Orton vs. Jack Swagger (w/Zeb Colter)
Orton was aggressive early on. Lawler thinks Orton got the biggest ovation ever at Extreme Rules. It was loud, but that’s bullshit. Old people are forgetful. Swagger took Orton down with a running shoulderblock. Orton came back with the Thesz Press. Orton was favoring his leg so Swagger dove at the left knee of Orton. Swagger attacked the knee of Orton to try to wear him down. Orton came back with a back body drop over the top rope to the floor. Orton wanted a draping DDT on the floor, but Swagger drove him into the barricade and then into the side of the ring. Back in the ring, Swagger worked on the left knee of Orton again. Orton was sitting on the top rope for some reason as Swagger knocked him off of there and Orton crashed to the floor for the vintage floor to commercial break seven minutes into the match.

Swagger continued to work on the knee of Orton as the match hit the ten minute mark. Orton was finally able to break free and the hit a superplex, which has become a regular spot of his. He did it off the middle rope instead of the top rope like usual. With a bigger opponent that’s smarter. Orton got a two count. Belly to belly suplex by Swagger got a two count. Orton made his comeback with the clotheslines as well as a powerslam. Swagger countered the DDT attempt with a powerslam for two. Patriot Lock by Swagger, but Orton fought out of it and hit the backbreaker for two. Orton hit his patented DDT off the middle ropes. The crowd was going crazy for the RKO, but Swagger ducked out of it and applied the Patriot Lock. Swagger was on the right leg at first. Then he switched to the left. Orton got to the ropes. Orton kicked himself free of the hold, he ducked a clothesline and hit the RKO to win the match after 16 minutes.
Winner: Randy Orton
Analysis: ***1/2 That’s the second night in a row where Orton had a terrific match. It was an Extreme Rules match with Show and this one was more of a technical match with Swagger. I don’t think anybody believed Swagger was going to win, but that was fine. They told a good story. Swagger looked credible. I think Orton’s being pushed for a future World Title shot against Dolph Ziggler whether it’s at the next PPV or further down the line. I don’t think he’ll be turning heel soon.

The main event of Triple H vs. Curtis Axel is up next. Who predicted that at the start of the show?

Triple H made his entrance first. Curtis Axel walked out in his tights. No t-shirt or apparel. Paul Heyman was with him.
Triple H vs. Curtis Axel (w/Paul Heyman)
Hunter got a clothesline early. Then he dumped Axel to the floor. I almost typed McGillicutty there. That might happen. Back in the ring, Axel got a clothesline. Hunter overpowered him with fists in the corner. Axel hit a dropkick. Back elbow knocked down Triple H. Axel hit a diving forearm attack off the middle rope similar to Bret Hart. The crowd was dead for Axel’s offense, which wasn’t a surprise. Heyman said that everybody was going to learn the name of Curtis Axel. He better hope so. Hunter hit shoulderblocks in the corner followed by his vintage knee smash. Spinebuster by Hunter. After he hit the move he was selling the pain from the night before. Clothesline over the top to the floor. He slammed Axel into the mat. Hunter looked disoriented as he hit a clothesline. He had trouble climbing back into the ring. A doctor at ringside checked on him as he sat down. He asked for water from the doctor. Hunter couldn’t get back into the ring even though he tried. The doctor signaled that Triple H was done. He couldn’t compete anymore. It went about six minutes when it was abruptly stopped.
No Match Result Due to Injury
The crowd was chanting “Triple H” as the doctors tended to him. The announcers barely said any words as Triple H was dealing with this and Raw ended like that at 11:07pm.
Analysis: The match never really got going, so no point in really rating it. I would have liked to see Axel go over, but there is plenty of time for that to happen.
I think what we saw is Hunter making himself look vulnerable, which he rarely does. The story can be that he has a concussion, but he doesn’t want to admit it and wants to keep fighting. With concussions being such a serious issue in pro sports (as well as WWE) they can use those real life conditions of athletes as part of a storyline. I don’t mind it. It was a weird ending though. Perhaps he should have experienced the symptoms after receiving a move instead of while he was on the attack, but that’s just a minor gripe. I don’t mind the angle. It also puts over Lesnar as a badass because of the beating he gave to Triple H the night before. I don’t mind that aspect of it.
I realize some fans are going to be pissed off with how Raw ended. That’s fine. I don’t mind it too much. We got two great matchups right before it. So what if there was no match result? It’s part of a story. Let’s see where it goes.
Maybe Triple H was dizzy because 19% of fans voted for Great Khali? I think that might be it!

Final Thoughts
It’s a 6 out of 10, which is an improvement over the last two weeks. Why? Because the in-ring action was a lot better this time.
Hour one: Bad for the most part. It usually is.
Hour two: It was average.
Hour three: Two matches combined to get nearly 40 minutes of in-ring time. I loved it. I wish more hours can be spent like that.
There were some parts of the show where things dragged a bit like every week of Raw, but it wasn’t that bad. I welcome a “new” character like Curtis Axel because it’s different from who we normally get to see and I think he’s a talented guy with a lot of potential. He also has the advantage of Paul Heyman in his corner, which will be great for him.
I loved how The Shield was used. Long match. They got to cut a promo too. They continue to impress me.
John Cena wasn’t on the show. I didn’t really miss him. Nothing wrong with a break once in a while.
I still miss CM Punk and Dolph Ziggler. I imagine Ziggler is back in a week or two. I’m not sure about Punk.

Two years ago today, Randy Savage died. I was so sad when I read about that. He was the guy that made me the fan I am today because I was in awe of his charisma, personality and athletic ability. I didn’t dislike Hulk Hogan (at least back then), but he was never my favorite. It was Savage. He’s one of the few guys in wrestling that totally got out of it. When he was done he moved on. No job backstage. He didn’t do conventions or indies much at all. Had a new wife and new life. Then he died when he had a heart attack driving his car. Should he be in the WWE Hall Of Fame? Of course. He should have been put in 10 years ago when they started giving a shit about it again. He should have been in when he was alive to give a speech and I would have gone wherever it was to be there.
Rest in peace, Macho Man. We love you and I know I speak for many others when I say that we will never forget you.
