Kurt Angle Says His Chances Of Making The U.S. Olympic Team Are “Slim To None”

Kurt Angle, who has not competed in an amateur wrestling contest since winning the gold medal at the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta, admits it’s highly unlikely that he will make the United States team for the 2012 event.

“I had to give it a lot of thought, it didn’t just come out of my head and say I’m going to try for Olympics,” Angle told BBC Sport of his upcoming trial in April. “What are my chances of making the team? Slim to none, I’m not going to lie but, if I can look you in the eye and say I have a chance that’s more than enough. That’s worth training five hours a day to get ready for the trials and for the biggest event of all, the Olympics.”

He added that family members are concerned for his health.

“I’ve had my ex-wife Karen tell me you’re not fit for it. I’ve had family members say they’re concerned about my neck, my mother’s always worried and even some of my brothers aren’t taking me seriously.

“Last time they were with me everywhere I went, now they’re like ‘nah he’s not really doing it’. I’ve been doing it by the grace of God as I don’t have near the support I had back then.”

  • From Glasgow, Scotland wishing Angle all the best in the Olympic trials, I believe he has the character and ability to piss all over the haters and non-believers. He may be alot older but he has come through alot of tough obsticles and people who dont believe may well get shit rammed down their throat in a few month

Calling someone out for reckless and irresponsible behavior is just hate? Keep trying Ricardo.

  • Ricardo

@CC: so I don’t get why people “criticize” him? Nice revision of reality. You of all people should be quiet on this one – after all, you’re the guy who systematically comes here to rant about Angle’s drinking habits when that isn’t at all the issue.

Evaluating his possibility of getting into an Olympic team after all his body went through during his career doesn’t even qualify as criticizing; it’s a perfectly fair assessment. Calling him a drunk is a whole other level. That can only be defined as hate, no matter how you try to spin it.

  • kamala’s foot

I think it was the beer bottle that said Kurt can make the team.

  • b c Mitchell

That’s a good idea actually. Physically he can’t contribute but mentally he’d definitely prove valuable

  • unknown known

Why not have kurt train others for the Olympics rather then train himself to be in the Olympics? someone of his caliber could only be an asset to the team.

In other news the sky is blue, the grass is green, and the sun is hot.

  • Nicholas

This is news not to me. Sorry Kurt Angle had way to many injury not that young and hate to say it most likely wouldn’t pass the drug test. I am not trying to hate just saying Kurt not that clean to pass a drug test.

  • CC

@Ricardo. His own family dont think he will make it, and think its bad for his health … maybe you think they are haters as well.

You dont even get why most people on here criticise him. Its not hate, its pity for the man who once was great.

  • Chris

At least he’s honest with himself. I think it’s more of a test for himself, just so there’s no regret 5 years from now.

  • Ricardo

Let the Angle haters start bitching in 3… 2… 1…

  • ItsTrueItsTrue

Hope he just goes for it. Whether he makes it or not, I wouldn’t consider it a failure. He has a lot to be happy for.

  • Stevie P

He prolly won’t make it but might as well try. Can’t hurt.

  • JIR

He admits he only has a slim chance I say go for it Kurt at least you will know if you still got it in amateur wrestling
