New champions crowned at NXT UK TakeOver: Blackpool

Tonight, we saw NXT UK’s first TakeOver event, TakeOver: Blackpool, and it lived up to the expectations built up by past TakeOver events on the American brand. We saw three championship bouts that left the Blackpool crowd and the WWE Universe in awe.

The show opened with the finals of the NXT UK Tag Team Championship Tournament. Moustache Mountain faced off against the Grizzled Young Veterans in what was, to quote Good Ole’ JR, a slobber-knocker. Trent Seven and Tyler Bate had their hands full with James Drake and Liverpool’s finest Zack Gibson. This match was full of stiff strikes, punishing submission holds, and a few spots that genuinely made some wonder if the competitors would leave with concussions. After a hard-fought bout, Gibson and Drake managed to put Seven away, after they’d left Bate lying out cold on the outside, with the Ticket to Mayhem, making them the first ever NXT UK Tag Team Champions.

Later on in the night, Toni Storm looked to dethrone Rhea Ripley and finally capture the NXT UK Women’s Championship. Ripley dominated Storm for the majority of the bout, but after Storm was able to kick out of the Riptide, she would eventually put the champion away after two Storm Zeros.
