Nick’s Quick Wits-Backed Into A Corner

The main event of WWE Battleground is one of the most interesting and anticipated matches in recent memory. It’s a match where you as a fan can’t even begin to guess how it will end, mainly because there’s only one logical ending, and with that scenario, which I will talk about later, WWE backed themselves into a corner.

Battleground-Rollins-vs-Lesnar

First of all, Seth Rollins is not beating Brock Lesnar clean, that’s absolutely out of the question. The man who ended The Undertaker’s undefeated streak should never lose clean again. There is the option of having Brock Lesnar lose via screwjob, but that was already done at WrestleMania, repetitive booking is far too rapid in WWE today, and it needs to stay away from this match. That’s two scenarios out right there. You could have Lesnar beat on Seth that he gets disqualified for say refusing to break a submission hold or refusing to stop beating on Rollins either in the corner or on the ropes. The thing is, that’s a stupid ending and would anger the fans, so that’s out too. Now, that really only leaves one option, and with this option, WWE’s booking team has once again backed themselves into a corner. That ending is Brock Lesnar defeats Seth Rollins to once again become the WWE World Heavyweight Champion.

Now, the problem with that is everyone knows Brock Lesnar is a part-timer, and the majority of fans don’t want to see a part-timer as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion. It was a smart move to have Lesnar loss the title without being pinned or submitted, it keeps him portrayed as unbeatable, and the belt is on someone who will defend it regularly. A full-time WWE World Heavyweight Champion means that there are several more title defenses and matches and challengers going after said champion, with a part-time champion, title matches are few and far between and not many challengers will get an opportunity.

Now, let’s take a logical look at this scenario. Logically, three people need to get there revenge on Seth Rollins, they are Brock Lesnar, Roman Reigns, and Dean Ambrose. Lesnar because his title was stolen from him, and Reigns and Ambrose because Rollins betrayed them. The ultimate revenge is taking the title from Seth Rollins, and only one can do that. So, logically, Seth should get destroyed by Lesnar who gets his revenge. I guess you could have Reigns and or Ambrose get revenge by costing Rollins the match, but Brock Lesnar shouldn’t and doesn’t need help winning matches, so if we’re still being logical, that option is out.
Here’s what I see happening. I believe Brock Lesnar defeats Seth Rollins to become the new WWE World Heavyweight Champion, it’s the only logical ending. Anything else seems unsatisfying. However, Lesnar will not have a long reign because I only see him getting the title back just to drop it to Roman Reigns at SummerSlam. Reigns was expected to win the championship back at WrestleMania, but the fans weren’t behind him and he didn’t seem ready. Four months later, he has much more fan support and can hold his own as a dominating singles competitor. Now, that leaves Ambrose as the odd man out. He could possibly face Seth in a number one contender’s match, finally getting his revenge by winning that, but what do you with Lesnar after that? He’ll still have a rematch, and if he’s going to lose, it should be rarely, if at all. So, even after all of this, WWE booking will still be backed into a corner. Lesnar is a draw, people pay to watch him, but at the same time, he’s booked to be unstoppable, and rightfully so. How to you book someone as unstoppable and keep him out of the title picture? There’s no easy way to do that and I hope WWE doesn’t screw up Lesnar’s booking so bad that he loses he appeal as a legit beast. Too many loses make Lesnar look like just another big guy wrestler who has a great look, but can be stopped, and having him win the title puts him in a situation where there’s little to no logical booking scenarios to take the belt off him without damaging his character. Brock Lesnar is the most legitimate beast of a wrestler the WWE has and he needs nothing but logical booking, unfortunately, WWE doesn’t have the best track record for that. Although, at the end of the day, it does make some good must-see television which WWE desperately needs. So I guess backed into a corner booking isn’t all bad after all.

Until next time, don’t back yourself into too many corners, think logically,

-Nick
