Nick’s Quick Wits-What Happened To Wrestling?

Wrestling seems to have become forgotten these days. I don’t mean that people have forgotten about WWE or that it is disappearing from the mainstream, quite the opposite is happening. What I mean is, WWE seems to be focusing way more on entertainment and mainstream press, than actual wrestling.

For me, when I say I’m going to watch Raw or a PPV, I say I’m going to watch wrestling, not entertainment, sports entertainment, or even WWE, I say wrestling. Why? I like wrestling. Some of my favorites are the ones who are in WWE or were in WWE because they loved wrestling and didn’t use WWE as a platform to become famous. If somebody is in WWE to become famous, but doesn’t love the wrestling aspect, then they shouldn’t be there. It’s a slap in the face to both performers and fans who wrestle and watch because they love wrestling.

This has evolved to the point that it’s almost taboo to even say the word wrestling, WWE is so focused on being entertainment it’s like they’ve forgotten they are supposed to be a wrestling company. Unless you’re a very young child, when you watch, you know wrestling isn’t a real sport, it’s scripted, I won’t call it the “F” word because I’m smart enough to know that’s not the right word to call it. The illusion of the competitive sport of wrestling still exists, but at the same time, the performers are called superstars, not wrestlers. If they are wrestling, then they should be called wrestlers, whether it’s legit competition or not, call them what they’re supposed to be. Calling them superstars more or less says they’re nothing more than entertainers putting on a show, not competitive athletes they are being portrayed as.

Now, I get that WWE is more mainstream than every these days, but when I’m watching, I don’t care if Raw, the PPV, or something said in a promo is trending on twitter. While yes, that does mean that people are watching and talking about the show, that point doesn’t need to be emphasized over and over again. If I want to see what trending on twitter I would go on the site during commercial breaks. Besides, “Number 1 trend worldwide” could easily be WWE hyping themselves up to be a perceived as the most talked about thing at the moment, where that very well may not be true.

Now, don’t get me wrong, I love when wrestling is talked about on the media, but not when it’s because of entertainment. If wrestling is supposed to be a sport, portray it as such. Unfortunately, with how it’s technically not, it’s hard to see it as nothing more than a entertaining television show. The notion of wrestling as a sport is long gone and won’t be returning. It’s entertainment, but if you love it, learn to live with it. Wrestling is dead, sports entertainment is alive and well.

Until next time, wrestle with the entertainment,
-Nick
