Original plans for Championship match at Royal Rumble

Bobby Rode Royal Rumble

While this year’s Royal Rumble had many exciting moments, a lot of fans noted that the return of former US Champion Dolph Ziggler during the match felt out of place.

During the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about Dolph and revealed a possible reason why his Rumble entry felt so bizarre.

According to Meltzer, Ziggler was originally expected to return way earlier in the show as the opponent of Bobby Roode in his Glorious US Open Challenge but plans changed in last minute.

It’s not known if Ziggler would have still been part of the Rumble if the original plans would have been executed, but his spot in the match looked to be more like a last minute addition instead of something which was planned in advance.

No word yet on what the company has in mind for the former World Champion after last night’s show but he should appear on this week’s SmackDown Live.

    Neither does the WWE

They should’ve had Punk’s or Bryan’s music hit, and then Ziggler comes out.

I disagree. Entering the Rumble makes more sense as it would be saying “I do not care about the US title. It is beneath me. All I care about is the Universal/World title”

  • Rob ‘Richard Hammond’ Picken

It’s almost like management are playing a game of “can you top this” on how poorly to book Ziggler it’s quite sad really given how good he is but they constantly give him the middle finger

He vacated it because the people didn’t care about him. So he walked away, and now they do. Plus, there’s the whole chip on his shoulder, needing to prove that he’s better than everyone thing. Plus, he’s never beaten Roode clean (his one win came after grabbing Roode’s tights). Plus, he never lost the thing, so he feels that Roode needs to beat him in order for Roode to call himself the true champ.

    It actually makes perfect sense.

    I don’t just don’t get Ziggler anymore.

Didn’t he willingly vacate the championship? Hopefully, they realized that having him return and challenge for it makes zero sense.
