Planned Universal Championship match reportedly nixed

We noted before how WWE had plans to give Finn Balor and other participants of the Fatal Five Way #1 contender’s match at Extreme Rules a Universal Championship match before WrestleMania 34. However, it seems that those plans have been nixed already.

In the latest edition of Wrestling Observer Newsletter, it was noted that the planned match between Roman Reigns and Brock Lesnar have apparently been moved up to SummerSlam from WrestleMania 34.

The idea behind this change is to have someone who can defend the title regularly on WWE TV, opposed to Brock who has yet to make his first title defence since winning it at WrestleMania 33.

In the recent episode of Wrestling Observer Radio, it was discussed how the change in plans will affect the Universal title picture going forward and it was noted that the planned match between Brock Lesnar and Finn Balor has already been scraped off.

Tough it’s being said Seth Rollins could still get a title shot somewhere down the line, presumably at Survivor Series to promote the upcoming WWE 2K18 video game.

While this does not mean that Balor would not get a title shot somewhere down the line, it certainly clears that there are currently no plans for him to be involved in the Universal title picture anytime soon.
