The decision to make The New Day lose the SmackDown Tag Team Championships at SummerSlam was really surprising as the now former Champions won the titles only a few weeks ago at Battleground.
However, if the reports from Wrestling Observer Newsletter are to be believed, WWE has some really long term plans for the former Tag Team Champions and this decision was a part of it.
According to the Newsletter, the company wants the New Day to go down in history as the ‘greatest tag team of all time’.
They already hold the record of the longest reigning Tag Champs in the history of the company and now Officials want the trio of Big E, Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods to break the record of most Tag Titles reigns as well.
The current record is held by the Dudley Boyz who have held the tag titles for a total of 10 times including their title reign in WCW and the trio’s loss will allegedly help them in getting near this number.
Though it’s worth noting here that The New Day has currently won the Tag Titles 3 times including their recent victory and if WWE really wants them to break this record, there is still a long way to go for the SmackDown Live tag team.
