Real reason why Anthem Sports is suing Matt Hardy

As we previously reported, Anthem Sports sent a cease and desist order to pay-per-view (PPV) providers to prevent Matt Hardy from using his ‘Broken’ gimmick on the Ring Of Honor (ROH) 15th Anniversary show. Anthem’s attempt to keep the ‘Broken’ gimmick Impact exclusive worked as far as the ROH PPV goes, but Hardy still stayed in character in his post-match promo and on Twitter.

PWInsider reports that in addition to Anthem feeling that the gimmick is their intellectual property, the primary reason for their legal action stemmed from Matt attempting to trademark the ‘Broken’ character. While Hardy did make the gimmick famous and came up with the majority of the ideas for the character, Anthem is attempting to use the loophole that he was not the only one creatively involved in its creation. Therefore, Anthem suggests that he should not receive full financial compensation off of anything made from the character.

They want a cut out of anything Hardy makes while using the character if he is to go anywhere else, especially the WWE.
