Shawn Michaels on who are current standouts in WWE

There are few people within the company who know the superstars like Shawn Michaels. HBK works with talents at the Orlando-based WWE Performance Center and with NXT live events all over the country. Michaels recently joined ComicBook.com and gave some huge praise to the superstars he thinks are the current standouts on the roster, including glowing praise for Drew McIntyre.

“I think Drew is doing a phenomenal job,” Michaels said. “He was a guy (that) had been in the WWE before, but then went out and just felt like he needed to grow. He needed to get more experience, he needed just try something different. He felt like what he was doing wasn’t working. And he went out and he did that. Then (he) came back through NXT, was a guy that did not have to be here at the Performance Center on a regular basis, but he still came down here, came and sat, certainly in our class, took part in it. He made the most of the opportunity that he had.”

McIntyre has certainly been impressive since returning to the company in 2017. Judging by HBK’s words, it isn’t hard to see why The Scottish Psychopath is looking like “The Chosen One” he was always thought to be.

Michaels went on to praise other superstars and mentioned Finn Bálor, AJ Styles, Johnny Gargano, Velveteen Dream, The Undisputed Era, Tommaso Ciampa, and Seth Rollins as current standouts in WWE.

I think the biggest part of it is his character. The original Drew was hit or miss.
Seem to remember him initially coming out with a manager/tag partner Dave Taylor and vanishing almost as soon as he started.
Then when he came back they gave him the chosen one gimmick but he was just a bland cliched cocky heel. At no point did WWE actually make him look special.
Then of course he ended up as a comedy character in 3MB.

Since going off and proving himself, he has come back to WWE with a character he developed himself, a new look which suits him better as he now looks the “chosen one” part.
Hopefully WWE do not mess this one up like they have done with so many others.

While we currently do not have a situation where WWE build guys up to be fed to Cena or Reigns down the line, the big worry I have is he will be built up and fed to Lesnar.

Vince was right about him being The Chosen One… he was just a few years too early.

In all seriousness though, McIntyre is a perfect example of how leaving WWE for a couple of years to get some experience on the indies can save someone’s career.
