TDS [021] – FightLife Interviews: Matt Cappotelli

FIGHTLIFE INTERVIEW: MATT CAPPOTELLI
By Justin Henry

In 2003, the third installment of WWE Tough Enough concluded with two winners. One was John Hennigan who, eight years later, is a fixture on Monday Night Raw as the “Shaman of Sexy,” John Morrison.

The other winner was Matt Cappotelli, a 23-year-old New Yorker with frizzled blonde hair and an easy-going demeanor. Cappotelli flourished in WWE’s development territories for nearly three years, honing his skills, and building on his incredible promise. To fans who have never seen Cappotelli wrestle, think Evan Bourne’s agility on a stockier frame, with the timing and presence commanded of WWE’s television heroes and villains.

Sadly, as Cappotelli reigned as the top champion in Ohio Valley Wrestling, the rising star was diagnosed with a brain tumor in late 2005. Cappotelli abdicated the title and began a long, hard road to recovery. He would have the tumor removed in mid-2007, but has not returned to the ring since his title vacancy.

However, Cappotelli, now 31, through faith and determination, has yet to rule out another go at the sport of professional wrestling. Married, keeping busy with several business endeavors, and exercising caution with his health, Matt Cappotelli is as incredible a story as you’ll find in the world of wrestling.

Though he keeps a tight schedule, Matt recently took part in a Q&A with Justin Henry, answering questions about his past and present, and the future that he never loses sight of.

Justin Henry: You’re over four years removed from having your brain tumor excised, but I understand you’re still undergoing routine bouts of chemotherapy. How are things looking?
Matt Cappotelli: Everything is looking great, no sign of cancer and I continue to get checked every 6 months.

JH: With Tough Enough having returned to the airwaves in April, on USA, much has been made of John Morrison and The Miz being the most successful alumni of the contests. Having worked with both men, Morrison on Tough Enough III and Miz in OVW, does their success surprise you?
MC: I’m not surprised by either of their successes, they are both talented guys who work hard and deserve the success they’ve attained. By the way, am I the only one who wants to knock Miz’s teeth out?

As you can tell in the above excerpt, we have a VERY revealing interview with Tough Enough III co-winner Matt Capotelli. Tomorrow, I’ll be back with something  bit longer, hopefully. My schedule has been hella busy, but don’t worry, I’m still here to satisfy your every taste bud!
