ThunderStruck: WWE Smackdown Analysis 01/03/14

We start Smackdown with a look at Daniel Bryan joining the Wyatts on Raw. Great storyline.

The Shield come to the ring to start the show here in Washington DC! Michael Cole tells us the that the Rhodes Brothers will be defending their titles tonight against Erick Rowan and Luke Harper.

Dean Ambrose talks first. He says the rumblings have been going on about the Shield not being on the same page anymore. He says Punk is dead wrong if he thinks he can divide and conquer the Shield. Reigns talks as well and says there is no weak link(implying Ambrose I think).

The Usos comes out to take on Rollins and Reigns with Ambrose on commentary. After about eight minutes, Ambrose interferes when the Usos have the upper hand and the match ends by DQ. CM Punk does a run in to help the Usos and the Shield retreat. Awesome match to start the show!

Vickie Guerrero comes out and announces a six man tag main event between Punk and the Usos against the Shield. More of the Usos and more of the Shield? Yes please!

Fandango w/Summer Rae takes on R-Truth w/Xavier Woods in a one on one match. Woods does commentary and calls out the Funkadactyls to dance in the middle of the match while he dances on the announce table. Truth wins the match with the finisher that used to be called the little Jimmy. Nice funny segment, but the match was too short for my liking(roughly three minutes).

We see a replay of Curtis Axel vs Dolph Ziggler from Raw. Yes, a replay of a match from Raw rather than a new match on Smackdown. Makes sense, right?

Erick Rowan and Luke Harper challenge Cody Rhodes and Goldust for the tag team titles. Goldust pins Rowan with school boy rollup to retain the gold in an excellent match. Outstanding tag team action; I’m expecting the Wyatt Family to have those tag titles sooner rather than later.

Renee Young interviews Big E. Langston. She wishes him luck against Curtis Axel tonight and then says she wants to know what Mark Henry will do to Brock Lesnar. Langston says he wouldn’t want to be Brock Lesnar. Axel interrupts the interview laughing about what happened to Henry. Axel’s personality is so awkward. Langston is an outstanding talker; he maximizes his minutes on the mic.

Aksana takes on Nikki Bella. Nikki wins a short match with that rack turned into a backbreaker once again. Nikki’s got a great rack…finisher, eh? Nice match from these two.

Big E. Langston defeats Curtis Axel with the big ending in a short match. Good showing from these guys. Axel had some good counters and a solid performance in this one, but Big E.’s dominant run will continue for now.

We see a flashback of Brock Lesnar’s return on Raw. Paul Heyman is interviewed by WWE.com. Lesnar will be doing some damage at old school Raw. Can’t wait for that show!

It’s time for Bad News Barrett. Barrett says the new year is upon us and he’s sure everyone has made their healthier resolutions. He says to be honest, there’s no way that any of them will be capable of sticking to their resolutions. Have I mentioned how much I don’t like filler characters?

CM Punk and the Usos defeat the Shield in their main event. Punk pins Ambrose after a GTS in another outstanding six man tag match. Awesome high paced showing to end the show!

A good match to start the show, end the show, and a tag title match that delivered mixed in with some short matches that weren’t terrible. Call it a 7/10 score for me. Thanks for reading!
