Twenty-Five Days Until Christmas, Twenty-Five Fights to Celebrate 2010 With

If you’ve seen any of my prior columns then you’d know that I have a passion for writing.  Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think I’m the best writer around. Hell, I’d be willing to bet some of my readers could do a far better job at this than I could.  The fact still remains, though, that I can string together a proper sentence and I’ve familiarized myself with the structure of a paragraph.

I think it’s safe to say that it comes to no surprise for any of you that I eventually decided on combining my interest in writing with my interest in mixed martial arts to share my thoughts and opinions on the sport that I attribute to changing my life with those all over the Internet.  Still, I never thought that it would lead to me writing columns for a website.  Personally, this has to be one of the best Christmas gifts that I’ve received.

That, ladies and gentlemen, is what segues into the article at hand.  You see, last year I wanted to do something grandiose to celebrate MMA in the year of 2009.  I sat down one night with a pen and notebook and jotted down what I thought defined the year of 2009 for MMA.  Well, I did it again this year, but this time I changed the formula up just a little bit.

The thematic guise Christmas has taken has always been about giving and receiving.  When you were young, this idea was carried out with warnings of receiving lumps of goals for being naughty and receiving good gifts for acting in line.  As you got older, this theme morphed into you showing your appreciation of someone else, mainly through gift purchasing, as a means of receiving something in return.  I mentioned that writing for wrestling-edge.com was the best gift that I’ve ever received.  Well, I want to return that gift by presenting the MMA fans with a countdown that I call Twenty-five Days Until Christmas, Twenty-five Fights to Celebrate the Year.  Each day, as it gets closer to Christmas, I will reveal a new fight on the list with a brief explanation.  Not all of these fights will be fifteen and twenty-five minutes war, some will, while others will be fights that I thought highlighted the year.  With that, let’s get to our first fight.

25.  Todd Duffee vs. Mike Russow

When it happened – UFC 114:  Rampage vs. Evans (May 29, 2010)

-If there’s one thing all MMA fans can agree on, the one thing MMA is prevalent in that seems to be lacking in many other sports, are the over the top, almost theatric, HOLY $@#%! moments.   One of the more recent of these moments came from UFC’s May 29th card, UFC 114:  Rampage vs. Evans.

While the event itself featured arguably one of the most anticipated fights in the Light Heavyweight division between Rashad Evans and Rampage Jackson, it was the Heavyweight encounter between Todd Duffee and Mike Russow that had every bar & grill in the United States shaken in a ruckus.

Todd Duffee, who was still riding high on the hype of his 7-second knock out over Tim Hague at UFC 102:  Couture vs. Nogueira entered UFC 114 as a heavy favorite against opponent Mike Russow, and it was very evident early on why the odds were on his side.  At the onset of the fight, Todd Duffee used his footwork to set up combos on his opponent Russow.  In fact, there were a couple of moments in the first round where Todd Duffee looked to be pretty close to finalizing the fight, but nothing ever came to fruition.

The fight still continued with Todd Duffee absolutely mauling Mike Russow.  The outcome was foreseeable, as a Unanimous Decision for Todd Duffee seemed almost inevitable.  Almost being the keyword.  With 2:28 left in the fight overall, Mike Russow stepped in toward Mike Russow and fired off a right hand.  Not only was Todd Duffee rocked, but it was discovered  seconds later that the punch had knocked him out cold.  Keep in mind that the right hand was the only considerable offense that Mike Russow had landed in the entire fight.  And that’s why it belongs on this list.

And for those wondering where this knock out is, here you go:
