As previously reported, John Cena was reported to have suffered from an ankle injury by the WWE who put up a tweet regarding the same.

However, the Wrestling Observer claims that the injury is a storyline to explain Cena’s absence from the ring. The initial plan was for Lars Sullivan to attack the 16-time World Champion backstage which would have led to their showdown at the upcoming WrestleMania.
The reason behind Cena’s absence from the Royal Rumble is due to his shooting commitments as he prepares for the shooting of the movie Playing With Fire. The shooting is set to commence from the 4th of February and is expected to end by the time WrestleMania arrives.
