WEC 53 Results, Final Show Before UFC Merger

The final event in the history of World Extreme Cagefighting took place this past Thursday in Glendale, Arizona, bringing to a close the WEC as they are set to merge with the biggest MMA promotion in the world, UFC.

 


 

The merger will see the creation of two new weight classes in the UFC, featherweight (145lb) and bantamweight (135lb) which will begin in January 2011.

The final was, as always, action packed from start to finish and featured a ‘fight of the year’ candidate main event lightweight title bout between Ben Henderson and Anthony Pettis.

Anthony Pettis defeats Ben Henderson via unanimous decision (48-47, 48-47, 49-46)
Dominick Cruz defeats Scott Jorgensen via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45)
Donald Cerrone defeats Chris Horodecki via submission (triangle choke) at 2:43 of round two
Kamal Shalorus defeats Bart Palaszewski via split decision (30-27, 28-29, 29-28)
Shane Roller defeats Jamie Varner via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:55 of round one
Brad Pickett defeats Ivan Menjivar via unanimous decision (29-28, 29-28, 29-28)
Eddie Wineland defeats Ken Stone via knockout (slam) at 2:11 of round one
Yuri Alcantara defeats Ricardo Lamas via knockout (strikes) at 3:26 of round one
Danny Downes defeats Tiequan Zhang via unanimous decision (29-28, 30-27, 29-28)
Danny Castillo defeats Will Kerr via knockout (strikes) at 1:25 of round one
Renan Barao defeats Chris Cariaso via submission (rear naked choke) at 3:47 of round one
