Backstage news on why AJ Styles retained WWE Championship at Money In The Bank

A lot of fans were surprised that Shinsuke Nakamura lost the WWE Championship Last Man Standing Match to AJ Styles, though it appears there was a reason behind it.

As we noted before, WWE announced that the current World Champion from SmackDown is going to be the cover star for the upcoming WWE 2K19 video game, along with the announcement of a ‘million dollar’ challenge.

Now in an update it was noted during the latest episode of Wrestling Observer Live that the reason AJ won the Championship bout despite Nakamura getting over as a heel was related to the upcoming game.

According to the Observer, a source has revealed to them that the Officials wanted AJ Styles to be the WWE Champion at the time of the major announcement and this is one of the reasons why he retained the title.

No word yet on if this means that Styles can lose the championship soon but it’s worth mentioning here that a gauntlet match to determine his next challenger has been announced for SmackDown this week.
