WWE References MH17 Tragedy to get Cheap Heat During WWE Battleground

Amid rumors that WWE is considering cooling the Rusev gimmick following the recent MH17 tragedy, it seemed that Lana made reference to the incident in a speech at last night’s WWE Battleground pay-per-view.

While not referring to the incident specifically, Lana said:

“You blame Russia for the recent current events.”

Everyone likely knew what she referenced and it was in poor taste – the line is already garnering negative responses online which could further prompt WWE to cool off the gimmick…

Update: WWE has issued a statement on the incident here.

What are your thoughts on Lana referencing the MH17 tragedy? Have WWE gone too far? Let us know in the comments section below…

I kind of always thought real wrestling fans would watch for what happens between the ropes, not the storylines.

  • jesonnier

The didn’t mention the fucking flight. This storyline has been going on for months, she was clearly referencing the conflict in The Ukraine.

  • FTLCore

People are dumber than stepping stones… the entire conflict in Ukraine is current events. Meaning everything before and after the plane. unless she actually said the planes name or mentioned a plane, You are pulling at strings

  • VoiceOfReason

Yes it’s entertainment, but the tragedy was real life. How would you feel if another country did this on Public television after 9/11 for cheap heat? I don’t mind a storyline ,but don’t bring a real life tragedy that happened recently to get cheap heat, it really shows how bad their product is and how unsympathetic some people can be to tragic issues.

  • TheFizPop

I am also a nobody, but as i have this thing called social media, i’ll still have my say, just to feel relevant

  • Eric Wescott

If you want CM Punk back so bad, all you have to do it……………………………………BOlieve!!!!!

  • jedi

There was a american on it…..

  • Claud3Giroux

It’s a show… It’s not real life… Anyone who can’t understand the difference between reality and entertainment needs to stop watching pro-wrestling.

  • CC

how is it an overreaction? they used the deaths of innocent people as a way to get heat for an outdated gimmick. The whole muslim thing was just as tasteless, but you can hardly say its any worse. Murder is murder and should not be used as a way to get cheap heat.

  • CC

Couldnt agree more. While they have branched out with more international talent and have stopped constantly making anyone not American into heels, they still have not realised that they are a world wide show not just in name. Nobody is asking them to stop supporting American troops or celebrating American holidays, just have a little more respect for countries other than their own.

  • VoiceOfReason

If they flame you it means that there was some truth in your statement that they don’t want to realize. I love America ,but if we were sensitive about 9/11 what makes the US think other countries aren’t sensitive of tragedies that take place outside US soil.

  • Nazi Pelosi

This shows how the WWE has become so desperate, tired and boring. Bringing in lame acts such as Adam and Bo Dallas has made me,and a lot of other people, simply lose interest. WHERE ARE THE COMPELLING STORY LINES? WHERE ARE THE HEROES AND THE HEELS? McMahon and Co.ought to do broadcast an infomercial on toilet paper, because the REAL wrestling fan can’t take the cavalcade of steaming turds that are stinking their living rooms every Monday and Friday nights. BRING BACK CM PUNK!

  • AmishPatel

Most definitely not. You would have probably seen a screen graphic or reference to how much of a tragedy it was with American lives lost. Unfortunately, and I may get flamed for this, America tends to live in its own bubble and is a little ignorant to things which happen outside of it’s country.

  • Solid

That’s Vince and Co for you.

and no, they won’t learn or change.

  • Matthew Farrell

Would they have used it to get cheap heat if it were an American flight that were shot down? Of course not. This is just disgusting

  • AmishPatel

I don’t agree – I just think it’s another tactless move, regardless of whether it’s tame or not. Will they ever learn?

  • Will Henderson

this is overreaction, i saw the vince clip since i didn’t see the PPV. it’s tame compare to having a “Muslim” wrestler have a group of masked men attack then Undertaker, that was extremely tasteless and made more tasteless when it aired the same day as a terrorist attack in England.
