WWE Payback 2016 PPV Results: Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles

Renee Young, Corey Graves, Jerry Lawler and Booker T welcome us in for the Payback Kickoff Show. Lawler plugged his new restaurant in Memphis, TN. Greg Hamilton is in the social media center and hyped that he would be talking with Sami Zayn. There was a hype video package for the Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho match. A video package to hype Roman Reigns vs. AJ Styles was shown.

Pre-Show Match: Dolph Ziggler vs. Baron Corbin.

Corbin tossed him into the corner and landed a big right hand for 2. Corbin caught him and sent him throat first into the top rope. Ziggler avoided a clothesline and locked in a sleeper. Corbin fought out but Ziggler hit the fameasser for a near fall. Corbin rolled to the floor and sent Ziggler face first into the ring post. Back in the ring, Ziggler rolled him up for the win.

Winner: Ziggler.

Sami Zayn is backstage in the social media lounge and answered fan questions. Zayn hyped his match with Kevin Owens.

Pre-Show Match: Kalisto © vs. Ryback for the United States Title

Ryback with a big right hand and then locked in a headlock. Kalisto sent him to the floor and hit an outside dive. Back in the ring, Ryback caught him and sent him into the turnbuckle. Ryback then hit a suplex.

We’re back from break with Kalisto hitting a springboard DDT. Kalisto then went to the top rope and hit a DDT that sent Ryback face first into the apron. Kalisto with a springboard crossbody for 2. Ryback cut him off and went for a powerbomb but it was reversed and Kalisto kicked him in the head. Ryback with a super military press slam from the top rope. Ryback misses big splash, Kalisto hits his finisher and retains.

Winner: Kalisto.

The New Day walk down to the ring to open the Payback PPV. Big E said that times are changing because there’s a new era in WWE. Why? Because New Day rocks.

Enzo Amore & Big Cass cut a promo in the ring about their match with The Vaudevillains.

WWE Tag Team Championship No. 1 Contenders’ Tournament Final: Enzo Amore & Big Cass vs. The Vaudevillains.

Gotch and Amore started things off. Gotch with a series of shoulder blocks. Amore caught him with a drop kick. English and Cass was tagged in. Cass helped him in the corner while Amore landed a series of strikes. Amore took out Gotch with a dive. Amore hit a crossbody to English for 2. English hit him with a big boot and then tagged in Gotch who sent Amore to the floor. The referee put up the x-sign and doctors checked on him. The match was called off. Cassady was crying while Amore was put on the stretcher.

Sami Zayn vs. Kevin Owens.

They exchange right hands right out of the gate. Zayn sent Owens to the floor and hit an outside dive. Owens sent him into the barricade. Back in the ring, Zayn hit a hurricanrana. Owens rolled to the floor and sent Zayn into the steel steps. Back in the ring, Owens lands a series of right hands. Owens with a high elbow but Zayn fought back and hit a wicked clothesline. Zayn with a series of right hands and a powerbomb for 2. Zayn went for it again but Owens fought out. Owens hit Blue Thunder Bomb for a near fall. Owens hit a neck breaker out of nowhere for 2. Owens went to the top rope and hit a frog splash for 2. Owens with the cannonball in the corner twice. Owens went for a powerbomb but Zayn reversed and hit a drop kick. Zayn with a suplex but Owens fought back and hit a clothesline. They both exchange right hands and Zayn rolled him up for 2. Zayn went for a springboard DDT but Owens reversed and hit a backbreaker for 2. They exchange right hands on the apron. Owens went for a powerbomb but Zayn reversed and hit a back drop on the apron. Zayn hit a DDT through the ring post. Back in the ring, Owens hit a superkick and a powerbomb.

Winner: Owens.

Post-match, Owens cut a promo about refocusing on his Intercontinental Title now that he has proven that he is better than Sami Zayn. Owens told Bryon Saxton that he will do commentary for the next match.

Intercontinental Title Match: The Miz © vs. Cesaro.

They lock up and Cesaro hit a suplex for 2. Miz kicked him in the shoulder and attacked Cesaro’s left shoulder. Cesaro fought back and landed a series of uppercuts. Cesaro then hit a superplex from the top rope. Cesaro hit an uppercut for 2. Miz then hit the Skull Crushing Finale for 2. Zayn ran down and attacked Owens on commentary. Back in the ring, Cesaro hit the giant swing to Miz. Cesaro with the crossface but Owens and Zayn brawled in the ring. This distracted Cesaro and Miz rolled him up for the win.

Winner: The Miz ©.

Post-match, Zayn attacked Cesaro and Zayn. Owens went for a powerbomb to Miz but Maryse pulled him out of the ring. Owens stood tall in the ring with the IC Title.

Dean Ambrose vs. Chris Jericho.

Ambrose knocked him down to begin the match and Jericho rolled to the floor. Ambrose chased him around the ring and back in the ring, Ambrose hit him with a crossbody for 2. Jericho sent him to the floor and then hit a baseball slide. Back in the ring, Jericho with a back elbow and a suplex onto the top rope followed by a drop kick. Jericho hit a suplex and then some right hands. Jericho worked over Ambrose’s back. Ambrose fought back and sent Jericho into the corner. Ambrose went for a suplex but blocked. Jericho with some elbows and then hit a double axe for 2. Ambrose fought back and hit a running bulldog. Jericho locked in the Walls of Jericho but Ambrose got out of it and sent Jericho to the floor. Ambrose with an outside dive that sent Jericho into the announce table. Ambrose got on the announce table and went for Dirty Deeds but Jericho blocked and launched him over the barricade. Both men got back into the ring. Jericho went for the code breaker but it was blocked and Ambrose hit a clothesline. Ambrose sent him face first into the top rope and hit an elbow drop off the top rope for 2. Jericho caught him and locked in the Walls of Jericho. Ambrose got out of it and hit Dirty Deeds for the win.

Winner: Ambrose.

AJ Styles cuts a backstage promo about winning the WWE Title tonight all by himself.

Women’s Title Match: Charlotte © (with Ric Flair) vs. Natalya (with Bret Hart).

Natalya knocked her down early and went for the sharpshooter but Charlotte rolled out and then back into the ring and landed a series of right hands. Natalya fought back and hit a german suplex for 2. Charlotte cut her off and worked over Natalya’s left knee. Charlotte hit a suplex. Charlotte went to the top rope but Natalya pushed her off and Charlotte went crashing to the floor. Natalya went for a baseball slide but was blocked. Charlotte went for a powerbomb but Natalya reversed and hit a hurricanrana. Back in the ring, Charlotte hit a big boot for 2. Natalya landed a clothesline for 2. Charlotte fired back with her own and landed a series of right hands. Charlotte went to the top rope and hit a moonsault. Charlotte puts a sharpshooter on Natalya and the referee calls for the bell.

Winner: Charlotte ©.

Post-match, Hart punched Flair. Natalya attacked Charlotte. They put Charlotte and Flair in the sharpshooter to end the segment.

Vince McMahon walked down to the ring and the fans changed CM Punk at him. McMahon talked about RAW’s history and how they reinvent the show. McMahon said that the Attitude Era was his new favorite era. He said that RAW is going through a new era and he need someone to run it the right way. He asked if the show should be ran by Shane or Stephanie? He then brings out Stephanie McMahon. She thanked the fans for their support after she was speared by Roman Reigns at WrestleMania. Vince told the fans to shut up and show some respect. Stephanie said that she would rather be feared or respect and not get sympathy from the fans. She took credit for the Women’s Revolution, New Day and signing AJ Styles. Stephanie took credit for the WWE Network. She vowed that every decision she made was always best for business. Stephanie brought up Shane not appearing in WWE for seven years and being a loser. She told Vince to remember that Shane turned his back on his family. The fans were chanting boring. Shane McMahon walked out and showed a series of articles that praised him. Shane said that Stephanie can’t take credit for the WWE Network subscriber count. He said that everyone was interested in his match at WrestleMania 32. Shane said that he left WWE because he thought the company should go in a different direction. Shane then played with the crowd about who they liked. Stephanie said that the fans like Shane more than her but she is the better mind for business. Vince said that he only listens to himself and no one else. Vince said he wants blood. He told them to figure it out and to work together.

WWE Title Match: Roman Reigns © vs. AJ Styles.

They lock up, and Reigns shoves him backwards. Reigns hit a back drop. Reigns hit a wicked clothesline. Reigns went for a spear, but Styles caught him with a kick. Styles with a series of right hands then a snapmare and a running forearm shot. Styles with a backbreaker for 2. Styles locked in the calf cruiser but Reigns rolled to the floor. Styles hit a springboard forearm shot that sent Reigns through the announce table. Styles got to the ring before the count of ten and Reigns was counted out.

Shane McMahon walked out and restarted the match with no count outs.

Styles tossed Reigns into the ring and went for a top rope dive, but Reigns moved. Reigns hit a jawbreaker, but Styles rifled off a series of strikes. Styles went off the top rope and missed the 450 splash. Reigns went to the top rope again, and Reigns punched him in the nuts causing the DQ.

Stephanie McMahon walks out and restarts the match with no DQs.

Styles with a series of right hands. Reigns tossed Reigns out of the ring. Styles landed a clothesline. Back in the ring, Styles went for a springboard dive, but Reigns caught him with a superman punch. Karl Anderson and Doc Gallows hit the ring and attack Reigns. Styles hit the springboard forearm strike, but Reigns got his foot on the bottom rope to break the count. The Usos run down and attack Anderson and Gallows. Styles went to the top rope but Reigns pushed him off, and Styles took out the tag teams at ringside. Reigns then hit a dive over the top rope to take out everyone. Styles fought back and sent Reigns into the ring. Styles hit a 450 splash off the top rope to Reigns for a near fall. Styles went for the springboard forearm strike, but it was blocked. Reigns hit the spear for the win.

Winner: Reigns.

Stephanie and Shane agree that Styles should have his rematch at Extreme Rules against Reigns in an Extreme Rules Match.
