Xavier Woods on the New Day: “We will all retire before we turn”

The New Day has just begun their fifth reign as tag team champions, and over the past four years have become one of the WWE’s greatest tag teams of all time. Though they’re incredibly successful in the tag team division, fans and critics alike have been waiting to see Big E, Kofi, and Xavier Woods return to singles competition, believing that at least two out of the three could find themselves holding a world title.

In an interview with Give Me Sport, the group’s resident Trombonist, Xavier Woods, tackled the idea of the group turning on each other and going their separate ways.

I don’t remember a group in wrestling that hasn’t turned on itself, or they’ll turn, then come back and be a group again. New Day – I’m telling you this right now – will never turn. Ever. We have zero desire to ever do that. I have zero desire to go to work and not work with my friends.

Woods went on to discuss those on Twitter attempting to predict when a turn would happen, questioning the reasoning behind them turning on each other.

People say on Twitter, ‘New Day is doing this, Big E is going to turn, this is happening. Oh, Woods is the snarky one, he’s going to turn. Kofi’s been at the top of the mountain before, he’s going to turn.’ Why? We are having the most fun we’ve ever had in our careers. It’s not like someone’s like, ‘Oh, I need to sabotage my friends to be champ.’ What is it to be champ when you’re a champ by yourself? You’re standing up there alone on this cold mountainous castle? That’s not fun. I’d rather be up there with my friends. Especially, if Kofi wins the Heavyweight Title, I’m also the Heavyweight Champion because we have ‘The New Day Rule’ and we share it. Just basic mathematics, we have a better chance becoming Heavyweight Champion if we stay as a group.

Woods finished up by saying that he’s not trying to swerve the fans.

‘Oh, he’s just saying this because it’s happening.’ No. My government name is Austin Watson. Austin Watson is telling you the truth. Thank you.

Would you like to see the New Day reach the top of the mountain together or as separate competitors? It’s hard to deny that all three of these men have the potential to big things individually. However, maybe they could grab Heavyweight Championship gold as a group. It would be entertaining to have someone challenge for the belt, and not exactly know who they’ll face at that pay-per-view.

  • Whistling Joe

I hope Vince reads what Xavier said and then breaks them up just to spite them.

  • BiggEZ

Yeah, that all sounds nice that he’s loyal to his boys and wants to keep it going, but if Vince or HHH wants to break them up, then that’s that. If DX, The NWO, The Shield and even The Authority can break up then sorry brother, so can The New Day.

  • Darrin Tyler

Wrong. Its not up to the wrestler. If the bosses want u to turn heel or break up the tag team you WILL do it.

  • Rob ‘Richard Hammond’ Picken

    “I’m Vince McMahon dammit!”

  • Rob ‘Richard Hammond’ Picken

I can’t be the only one who thinks they’re stale at this point surely?

  • MindTricked

Considering the way this past Tuesday’s Smackdown played out, with Big E sorta not feeling things, I find the timing of this story suspicious.

  • Wicka Steve

Four years of New Day, zero character development. Please retire, today.

  • He’ll form a better New Day, with Tye Dillinger and R-Truth. Can’t fail.

Xavier “We will never turn on each other”
Vince “Hey Xavier, we are going to be doing an angle where Big E turns on you and Kofi backs him”
    Xavier “But…”
    Vince “What?”
    Xavier “Ok.”
