During her appearance on Morning Joe on Thursday, the former Secretary of State discussed the ongoing student protests over U.S. support for Israel in the Gaza conflict. She indicated that young people are not only uninformed about Middle Eastern history but also about many other topics, including those relevant to the U.S.
“I’ve spoken with many young people over the last several months,” Clinton said. “They don’t know much about the history of the Middle East, or frankly, about history in general, whether it’s global or domestic.”
Clinton also claimed that if former Palestinian Authority leader Yasser Arafat had accepted a deal proposed by former President Bill Clinton, the Palestinians might have an independent state by now. She described it as “one of the great tragedies of history” that Arafat couldn’t agree to the terms.
Her statements sparked criticism from left-leaning circles, with some accusing her of showing “overwhelming contempt” for anyone who isn’t part of her circle. Others criticized her for lacking compassion in the context of the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
One critic went as far as to call out the Democratic National Committee for allowing a “condescending, unlikeable failure to repeat a bunch of ahistorical lies and call young people stupid.”
it’s hard to believe that her political style (obvious, overwhelming contempt for voters, potential voters, or really just anyone who isn’t her) proved unsuccessful in 2016 https://t.co/G3otX6xLha
