Becky Lynch reacts to her PWI ranking

We noted before how Raw Women’s Champion Ronda Rousey was ranked #1 in the Pro Wrestling Illustrated top 100 women list of 2018 which resulted in some fan backlash.

Many believed that the SmackDown Women’s Champion Becky Lynch should have been the top-ranked star on the list but to the surprise of many, she wasn’t even ranked in the top ten.

Lynch was ranked at the #11 position in the list, and the Women’s Champion reacted to this ranking via a tweet recently, claiming that she is an 11 on the scale of 1-10:

Below is the list of the top ten women’s wrestler according to PWI:

  1. Ronda Rousey
  2. Alexa Bliss
  3. Charlotte Flair
  4. Io Shirai
  5. Asuka
  6. Shayna Baszler
  7. Carmella
  8. Nia Jax
  9. Mayul Watani
  10. Kairi Sane

Yeah, as I say, popularity with fans has absolutely zero to do with it.
I disagree that she is the biggest draw as viewership is actually down, but yeah, she is certainly a bigger name.

PWI 500 is based on kayfabe wins and losses, but also factors in things like “Intangible factors”. Rousey, for example, got #1 because not only is she undefeated, she is the biggest box office draw in women’s wrestling right now. Basically, she got extra points for being famous outside of wrestling.

Nia should not be on the top ten. She isn’t a good wrestler, she isn’t over, and hasn’t been booked in anything remotely interesting.

  • CC

Because they have a better win/loss record.
It is how the PWI list has always worked.

Look at Charlotte for example, she rarely loses.

I am not about to look how many televised matches each has had, but if Charlotte has had say 20 matches with 17 of them being wins, and Becky has 30 matches with 23 wins, Charlotte would rank higher. It’s a percentage game.

But then why are Alexa, Charlotte, Carmella, Nia etc are above Becky?

You already know you messed up when your Top 10 consists pretty much entirely of WWE stars.

Sadly the PWI list is not based on popularity, purely kayfabe televised win/loss record, and Rousey has won all 10 of her matches (yeah, what a huge number of matches huh).

The problem with the PWI list is it is not based on talent or actual popularity, it is purely based on kayfabe wins and losses. And sadly, Rousey has only had 10 televised matches in 7 months, but they are all wins.
Becky has probably had at least 3 times that amount and her win loss record is not great seeing as how WWE booked her for the early part of this year.
Had Asuka for instance not been so poorly booked after her WM loss and kept her winning streak instead, she would have topped the list easily as at least she has wrestled more in the last 7 months than Rousey.

I do not think there is a more popular womens wrestler right now than Lynch, so in any other ranking list, she would come out on top.

Currently she is indeed the hottest female wrestler around. The amount of reaction she currently generates from fans is peerless. No doubt about that.
