Ring of Honor issued the following:
The STARS OF NEW JAPAN RETURN TO RING OF HONOR this February at Sam’s Town in Las Vegas! ROH returns to SIN CITY for TWO HUGE NIGHTS of action starting February 26 with the 14th Anniversary pay per view extravaganza! The following night, the stars of ROH and New Japan will participate in a national television taping!
Hiroshi Tanahashi
When “Mr. Tokyo Dome” holds a single finger out, it is not to say he is number one. Rather the one, confident finger pointed to the sky signifies that he is the one in “100 Nen ni 1-ri no Itsuzai”, a phrase in English that translates into once in a century talent. With the most IWGP World Heavyweight Championship reigns in New Japan history and two G1 Climax victories on his resume, that moniker is difficult to dispute.
With great excitement, Ring of Honor is proud to announce the United States return of seven-time IWGP World Champion HIROSHI TANAHASHI at the 14th Anniversary pay per view and television taping in Las Vegas!
Tanahashi has proved that his talent transcends borders. The man trained by the legendary Tatsumi Fujinami, Great Muta, and Kensuke Sasaki is undefeated in singles competition in Ring of Honor rings, picking up wins against current ROH World TV Champion Roderick Strong, former ROH World Champion Michael Elgin, and current ROH World Tag Team Champion Michael Bennett.
This time around, Tanahashi has signed an open contract to fight Ring of Honor’s finest with the possibility of having the IWGP World Title around his waist for a record eighth time. Tanahashi, who finished the G1 Tag League with a winning record teaming with Elgin, will face “Rainmaker” Kazuchika Okada on January 4, 2016 at Wrestle Kingdom 10 in the next chapter of their classic rivalry and could end up with a much heavier carry-on bag should he win.
IWGP Champion or not, the real question is who will step up to the challenge and take on the legendary “100 Nen ni 1-ri no Itsuzai” in Las Vegas? Will it be a singles star or a tag team?
It is no coincidence that “Mr. ROH” and “Big Mike” have been on two of the biggest tears of their respective careers after having to take their games to their peaks to compete against “Mr. Tokyo Dome”. Certainly, any young ROH star or tag team surely will want to test their mettle against one of the most successful Japanese stars of all time. Or will we see Tanahashi and Elgin take their friendship beyond the G1 Tag League and join what is already Ring of Honor’s greatest tag team division ever? We wait with baited breath to find out in the coming weeks!
