CM Punk: ‘I Was Going To Die In WWE’

CM Punk’s Busted Open Radio interview was recapped by HikingBeginner on the Squared Circle Reddit. AJ Lee Sad Medical News Stuns WWE Fans. The recap states:

I like quotes from interviews being put into one post and one article etc. Listening to it at the moment, so here’s some quotes and a description of what the interview entailed 🙂

He jokingly begins the interview by saying “I’m sick of doing media already!” Full on sarcasm btw.

Says media has honestly been fun but also can be a little stressful with how the internet is. “There are some people on twitter who consider themselves journalists who will clickbait and post out of context quotes, stuff like that.”

CM Punk strongly feels that WWE continously “tell you that we’re not pro wrestling! so why continue to bat for them?”, this is in conjunction with his “2005, I left pro wrestling” line on his debut. I Can understand why he feels the way he does about his time there. We all have jobs that we don’t like but still do.

“I’ll be at TV, what? Once a week?” compares to the grueling schedule of his old days. Mentions that this is the biggest of the many differences between AEW and WWE. He never outrights says the company name “WWE” but rather “the other place I used to work”.

References the online criticism to Tony Khan about being a fan that’s running the company, to which he says “isn’t that what we want? Aren’t we all Marks?”

He is really adamant about this return being the “perfect storm”. Talks about how connected he felt when making his debut. Says he’s right where he needs to be at the right time.

“Lame answer is everybody. I’ve never worked with The Young Bucks, Kenny Omega. I worked with Cody in what… 2009?” when asked about who he wants to face. Even though he mentioned the above names he continued to really emphasise about the young talent.

“…Not everything is super polished. Not everything is a LED screen. these guys have different gear, different looks. Personalities are all different. You can tell they’ve trained in different ways and come from different spots. They have different styles. That’s what 100% attracted me to the AEW locker room”.

Says there are way more money matches in AEW than anywhere else for him.

Says “I don’t know if I’m happier to see all these old friends or to see all these new faces”. He sent Tommy Dreamer a text in which he said that he’s basically Terry Funk. Mentions people coming up and telling him “I watched you when I was 10” in jest.

Tommy Dreamer really goes into a deep dive on how CM Punk paved the way for Independent talent and what he means to fans and this generation of fans. It really puts into perspective as someone (me, the guy typing this)who missed Punk’s years on top, just how big this man is to not only his fans but to peers and all these legends. Crazy

“The only thing I ever tried to do was tell a good story in the ring and learn from people that came before me”. Talks about how legends like Dusty and Harley Race loved him, only to then get to the big stage and get told he’s not nothing and won’t make it. “The chip on my shoulder came out and I was like I’ll prove you all wrong. and I did.”

Tommy Dreamer go back and forth about their relationship and how much they mean to each other. the way one talks about the other, they are really good friends. CM Punk says sorry for getting emotional “but that means a lot.”

Says he tries to limit what he does say about that company, but anything he does say, in his words “is the truth”.

“I was going to die.. you know what I mean? In my mind, I was like what would Harley Race do? he would keep going. Theres only so many times you can get hurt and keep… keep going.”

Says he saw too many friends get swallowed up by drugs, alcohol and this business. I was the ice breaker to it. “I’m really proud of it” when talking about being able to take that step away no matter what.

Talks about not being given time off after numerous injuries, says that “they’re not going to take care of me. I’m going to take care of myself. It caused a lot of silly drama. A lot of silly baggage. But I’m alive. It sounds dramatic but it’s not bullshit.”

Emphasis on how he is proud of that decision to quit WWE in 2014. Was very passionate in explaining the situation and being proud of himself that he got out.
