Edge & Orton’s “Chris Benoit” spot apparently offended some people

Edge and Randy Orton faced off against each other in an intense Last Man Standing match. The match included a spot that was not liked by some fans at all.

They performed a spot in the gym of the WWE Performance Center where Orton wrapped weight-lifting equipment around Edge’s neck. He then attempted to hang the Rated-R Superstar. This is eerily similar to what happened to Chris Benoit.

On Wrestling Observer Radio, Dave Meltzer talked about this segment. Meltzer said that while he certainly knows some people would say it did not offend them, he also knows people in the WWE who were offended. He says that he personally couldn’t “not see” Benoit. He also thinks it may have affected the wrestlers more than the fans because while some fans may be new or unaware, every wrestler knows what happened with Benoit.

It was said that the spot had to go through a chain of approval, which makes it hard to believe why no one removed the spot from the match.

Chris Benoit murdered his wife and son, before hanging himself on a piece of workout equipment. It would have been better if Edge and Orton had considered not to go with the spot.
