Canelo Alvarez suffered a shocking defeat

Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez suffered a disappointing defeat at the hands of Dmitry Bivol as he tried to conquer yet another weight division in Las Vegas on Saturday night. Bivol secured a win by unanimous decision, successfully defending his WBA crown  The result is a shocker as it was only Canelo’s second ever in over 60 fights. The only other loss on Canelo’s record came at the hands of Floyd Mayweather and the Mexican never got the chance to avenge that loss. But that was back in 2013 and he has cleaned up the middleweight divisions below light-heavyweight. Bivol  shocked the fans when he emerged victorious.

The Russian secured 115-113 from all three judges, but Canelo announced after the fight that he does intend to activate the rematch clause and Bivol welcomed that idea in the ring.

Bivol said the following after the win.

“I’m glad I proved myself today, I’m the best in my division and I keep this belt. He’s a great champion, I respect him and all his team. If you don’t believe in yourself what do you do? You achieve nothing. I believe and my team believed in me. felt his power. You can see on my arm, he beat my arm up but not my head. That’s better.”

“You have to accept it, it’s boxing,” Alvarez said of the loss. “He’s a great champion. Sometimes in boxing you win and lose and I’m not giving excuses. I lost today and he won.”

Alvarez stressed he wanted the pair to fight again, adding: “Of course I do. This doesn’t end like this.”
