While Democratic Party leaders are publicly showing unity, Joe Biden’s frustration with the way his re-election bid ended might be surfacing.
Biden had once hoped to play a major role at the Democratic National Convention in Chicago, where he would make his case for another term. Now, he’s only scheduled to speak on the first night and will likely call for party unity, even though the party has moved on without him.
Reports say Biden plans to leave the convention early and will miss Barack Obama’s speech on Tuesday. This absence is sparking speculation that Biden is upset with Obama for not supporting him more after his tough debate with Donald Trump.
Biden will also miss the symbolic handover of the 2024 presidential election to Kamala Harris, which might send a bad message to their GOP opponents and the public.
The White House hasn’t confirmed these details yet. Spokesman Andrew Bates said more information about the president’s schedule will be available later. Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Biden will speak at the convention, focusing on unity and his achievements over the past three years.
The convention will feature speeches from Hillary Clinton on Monday, Obama on Tuesday, Bill Clinton and Tim Walz on Wednesday, and Harris closing the event on Thursday.
Biden feels frustrated with key party leaders like Obama, Nancy Pelosi, and Chuck Schumer for how his removal from the race was handled. He is especially upset that Obama didn’t directly address the push to replace him. He also views Pelosi’s actions as harsh but acknowledges they were necessary for the party’s chances.
