In an interview on ABC’s “This Week,” Senator Lindsey Graham (R-SC) was pressed about former President Donald Trump’s continued denial of the 2020 election results. Anchor Pierre Thomas asked Graham if he was concerned about Trump not setting the proper standard by persistently claiming victory.
Graham responded by drawing a parallel to Hillary Clinton’s actions after the 2016 election, stating that she also claimed to have been cheated. He noted that politicians often express the belief that they were denied a fair election.
However, Graham went on to express his belief that Trump’s focus on the 2020 election could impact his chances in 2024. He emphasized that he accepts the results of the 2020 election but is concerned about the upcoming one. Graham suggested that if Trump focuses on presenting a vision for improving security and prosperity in the U.S., he could win in 2024. On the other hand, if Trump continues to dwell on the 2020 election, Graham believes he will lose.
“Well, you know, Hillary Clinton had the same view that she was cheated,” Graham said. “He’s not the first politician to claim to have been denied a fair election.”
The Senator did, however, go on to say that he flat out believes Trump will lose the 2024 election if he continues to dwell on 2020.
“I accept the election results of 2020,” Graham said. “I’m worried about 2024. If President Trump puts a vision out improving security and prosperity for Americans, he will win. If he looks back, I think he will lose. So at the end of the day, the 2020 election is over for me.”
