Luke Harper on almost quitting professional wrestling

Luke Harper, one half of the Smackdown Tag Team Champions, is a well-respected wrestler. Fans and colleagues alike praise his ability as a big man.

While a part of the WWE, Harper has captured the Intercontinental Championship, the Smackdown Tag Team Championship, and the NXT Tag Team Championship. While he might not be in the spot people expected him to be, dominating the tag team division isn’t a bad place for Harper.

However, it seems that, had things gone differently, we might not be seeing Harper on Tuesday nights. Luke Harper spoke with RochesterFirst.com about making his way to the WWE and told them that he initially turned them down when he got called for a tryout.

My wife told me she was pregnant and I lost my job. I was a librarian at Frederick Douglas Middle School and so I thought the world was over and they called and said ‘Hey, can you come for a trial?’ I said ‘No, I have a broken leg.’

Six months later, WWE came knocking on Harper’s door again. At this time, he was considering retiring from the ring permanently.

My wife was 8 months pregnant and I was just coming back from Japan and I said, ‘Honey, Im’ done. This is it. I’m just going to get another real job and we’ll make do here.’ And that’s the day the WWE called saying ‘Hey, can you come for a tryout?’

It’s crazy to think someone as talented as Luke Harper was close to hanging up his boots so early in his career. I’m happy the company called him back on that day. He, along with Eric Rowan and Bray Wyatt, has been a part of some of my favorite matches on the main roster in the past five years.
