Athena was recently involved in a controversy due to her match in AEW.

The October 17th AEW Dark: Elevation featured a divisive match between Athena and local talent Jody Threat, won by ‘The Fallen Goddess’ in just under five minutes. Although the match got off to a normal start, things took a turn for the worse when the former Ember Moon began laying into Threat following an alleged failed comeback sequence.

Footage of the over-physical match quickly went viral on social media, with many questioning and outright slamming Athena for her actions in the match.  WWE Hall of Famer Booker T also slammed Athena for her actions.

Speaking on his Hall of Fame podcast, the six-time World Champion claimed there was no way for Threat to brace herself from one particularly hard kick:

“I’m going to tell you, AEW, they are one bad accident away from something really, really being done about what’s going on in that company and people looking at it from a different perspective.”

“She kicked this girl so hard. There’s no way you could brace yourself for what I saw. Is it cool? Are the fans loving it? Yeah, yeah, they are loving it.

“But there’s a reason I’m still walking around today … it’s because I knew how to go out and perform.”

Booker T said there was a “certain way” he would wrestle that was different depending on whether he was at a house show, weekly TV, or a pay-per-view and “neither one of them was the same.” He then went on to take aim at the fans, saying they “don’t give a damn” about wrestlers getting hurt.

“They don’t care about those guys in the ring. [Wrestlers] are nothing more than toys, a video game for these guys. If they’re not out there getting a ‘This is Awesome’ chant, they don’t give a damn about these guys going out there getting hurt. They really don’t.”
