NEW IWGP Heavyweight Champion crowned at NJPW’s New Beginning in Osaka

Jay White defeated Hiroshi Tanahashi in the main event of NJPW’s New Beginning in Osaka pay-per-view and became the NEW IWGP Heavyweight Champion. White hit his finishing move “Blade Runner” on Tanahashi to get the pinfall victory and the title.

White has become the 68th IWGP Heavyweight Champion in the history of the company. After the match, White cut a promo about his victory against Tanahashi and how a new era has dawned upon NJPW:

(h/t wrestlinginc for transcript)

I just beat Tanahashi again. I am the champion in spite of each and every one of you. I said at a press conference I would take this and I would spit on your face and that’s exactly what I’m doing when I have this belt. I don’t play by your rules, I don’t show heart and compassion like Tana.

It doesn’t matter, because I am the real IWGP Heavyweight Champion. I do not do this for any of you, I do this for me, I do this for Gedo, I do this for the Cutthroat Era Bullet Club. It is a new dawn, a new age, a new beginning. And Tana and all of you can only breathe with The Switchblade. Welcome to my new era.

With his victory over the ACE of NJPW, White has been cemented as the top foreign Superstar and one of the top Superstars in general within NJPW. It will be interesting to see what comes out of Jay White’s reign as the NEW IWGP Heavyweight Champion.
