Paul Heyman recollects why WWE paired him up with CM Punk

Paul Heyman did not work with CM Punk till the latter’s iconic 2012 heel turn during his 434-day Championship reign. The two worked together till Paul Heyman betrayed him at the Money in the Bank pay-per-view in 2013.

But they continue to be good friends off-screen till date.

Inside The Ropes recently released a new clip of a July 2016 live show interview of Paul Heyman. In the interview, Paul Heyman talked about how he became CM Punk’s advocate on WWE and fondly reminisced their shared time on-screen.

Paul Heyman teamed up with CM Punk to protect John Cena

CM Punk’s mic skills need no introduction and he very evidently did not need someone like Paul Heyman to do his talking. But their pair-up was initially done to keep John Cena from being booed by fans.

Paul Heyman recalled that it was Vince McMahon’s idea to team them up in order to make Punk’s heel turn even more impactful.

“How do you turn CM Punk heel in Chicago? Make it even more difficult: How do you turn him heel on John Cena? Because Night Of Champions is in Boston, which is John Cena’s hometown, where they are sure to boo John Cena and cheer CM Punk. So, Vince comes up with the idea ‘If I can’t make them boo him, I can at least make them gasp.”

Paul Heyman: I had the time of my life with CM Punk

Recalling their days of working together, Paul Heyman stated that he absolutely loved working with The Voice of the Voiceless.

“I look over at him at he says ‘Can you believe they’re f***ing putting us together?’ And I’m like ‘We’re both gonna be f***ing fired in the next four weeks, don’t you get it?’ And he goes ‘But the s**t we’re going to stir in four weeks, they don’t f***ing have a clue!’ I loved working with him, I loved it. I had the time of my life.”

“We had a blast working with each other because, just like me, he had no idea what he was going to say when he went out to the ring. He was just doing it, you know, allegedly shoot promos that then get wrapped around into the storyline that we’re telling that he fervently believed in his heart that he was telling the truth.”

There is always one rumor of the other of CM Punk returning to the ring. But it is highly unlikely to happen, especially in WWE.

Paul Heyman, on the other hand, has moved on to being the special counsel of Roman Reigns after managing Brock Lesnar. He is at the side of the Tribal Chief at all times, helping him handle the “business”.
