Johnny Gargano injured in match taped for next week’s NXT

A top star from WWE’s black-and-gold brand suffered an injury during a match taped for next week’s episode of WWE NXT on the USA Network.

Johnny Gargano was wrestling Ridge Holland in a match where the winner qualifies and advances to compete in the NXT North American Championship 5-Way Ladder Match at NXT TakeOver: XXX, and during the match a very scary spot occurred.

Gargano was dropped right on his head during the match, which caused the match to be stopped dead in its’ tracks for several minutes while personnel, including Paul “Triple H” Levesque and Shawn Michaels, came to check on his condition.

Eventually, the decision was made to allow Gargano to complete the match, which is scheduled to air as part of the WWE NXT episode on the USA Network on Wednesday, August 19, 2020.

Immediately after he finished the match, Gargano was again checked on by personnel. He also reportedly apologized to those who were in attendance during the taping.

Dave Meltzer, the longtime editor and founder of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter at F4WOnline.com confirmed the initial report by John Pollock of PostWrestling.com, adding that it is unlikely that WWE will air the spot that resulted in Gargano’s injury.

Meltzer noted that Gargano-Ridge likely went a different direction than the one initially planned once the match did resume, so that the final edited version that airs on 8/19 will make sense.
