Rey Mysterio on his WCW unmasking in 1999

While his mask has become a synonym of Rey Mysterio, there was a time he was forced to unmask on WCW TV in 1999, after losing in a tag team match against Scott Hall and Kevin Nash.

During a recent interview with The Apter Chat with Bill Apter and Josh Shernoff, Mysterio talked about his time with the promotion and what it meant for him to drop the mask.

According to Mysterio, he was paranoid when he heard about the bookings since the mask is everything to him and it’s a heritage which he wears to honor his uncle.

The former World Champion then revealed that he tried to reverse the decision from the bookers but ultimately gave in because he was bonded with a contract:

At the time I said there’s nothing I can do at this point. I fought and I tried and there’s just no sense of pursuing something that’s not going to happen. So I gave in. I had a contract. I had the obligations. So I gave into it and made the best out of it.

As we noted before, Rey Mysterio signed a two years contract with WWE recently and now it will be interesting to see when he makes his return to the company.
