Republican Senator Mitt Romney of Utah delivered a scathing rebuke to his fellow party members for their presence at Donald Trump’s trial concerning hush money paid to a porn star he cheated on Melania with. In a fiery statement to CNN’s Manu Raju, Romney expressed his disdain, calling it “demeaning” and “difficult to watch.”
Romney emphasized the importance of upholding dignity and decorum, particularly among individuals vying for the highest offices in the nation. He criticized the spectacle of politicians “prostrating themselves in front of the public” in apparent attempts to curry favor with the party’s nominee.
Former Republican Representative Liz Cheney of Wyoming also joined the chorus of disapproval, taking aim at Speaker Mike Johnson of Louisiana for his attendance at the trial. Cheney’s pointed criticism highlighted what she perceived as a contradiction between Johnson’s involvement and his purported commitment to moral values.
Meanwhile, Senator James Lankford of Oklahoma likened the trial’s salacious details to the scandals of the 1990s involving former President Bill Clinton. He described the unfolding events as “painful” and “salacious,” drawing parallels to a bygone era of political scandal.
Senator Lisa Murkowski of Alaska echoed similar sentiments, expressing frustration at her colleagues’ focus on the trial, particularly Senators Tommy Tuberville of Alabama and JD Vance of Ohio. Murkowski questioned the necessity of prioritizing the trial over other pressing matters, labeling it as “ridiculous.”
