WWE has been the home of many masked wrestlers in the past. Santos Escobar who joined WWE as El Hijo del Fantasma talked about the importance of the mask in Mexican and Latin American culture.

It is holy for any luchador and it is the part of who they are. He explained that once the mask is off they are not allowed to wear it again.

Santos Escobar, the current NXT Cruiserweight Champion stopped wearing the mask since June. During the show, Santo talked about his parents’ reaction as well of him being wrestling unmasked.

He said:

“It shocked my dad and my mom,” he replied. “But it’s true, the mask is one of the most important aspects of Lucha Libre culture and tradition. To be fair, I had already lost my mask in Mexico, and once you lose your mask, you’re not supposed to re-mask again.”

He spoke on his gimmick change and reintroduction of Lucha Libre. Santos Escobar also explained the real meaning the culture.

He said:

“But what I wanted to do was be El Hijo del Fantasma – this big feature at the Cruiserweight Tournament. It gave me a way to reintroduce Lucha Libre to the WWE Universe because I think they’ve been misled by masked men jumping all over the place; Lucha Libre is not like that. Putting the mask on again, I managed to capture the attention of the WWE Universe.”

Santos Escobar successfully defended his NXT Cruiserweight Championship against Isaiah ‘Swerve’ Scott at NXT Takeover:31
