Stockwell Superstar of The Week – Sheamus

TLC is over folks and we have a new champion, Sheamus. To say this was a shock is somewhat of an understatement, because WWE haven’t pulled something like this since Lesnar. So what does this mean for Raw and the title and more importantly, what does this mean for Sheamus?

Firstly, lets consider Sheamus, he follows a particularly monster mold – unlike Lesnar who also got his big shot early on, Sheamus doesn’t have much to base a good heel champion on. His character very much relies on the fact that he is big, destructive and unstoppable so if the writers were to draw him back into a heel champion that flees the scene, it just wouldn’t work and if anything, it would destroy the character they have built for the last few months. Lesnar had the luxury of being awesome but worried about possible contenders who may knock him off the top spot but if the big Irishman were to take this route then how would it affect his gimmick?

Also, if he were to continue down the road he has taken, then how long would it be before the championship scene became stale again – not that it wasn’t stale in the first place, but my point is, how long will the audience be able to bare a heel champion always destroying his competition?

Frankly, whatever option the WWE decide to go is going to be a bad one eventually. The first road would destroy their champions established character and the second path would only bore people…however it could be used as a nice platform for up and coming stars in that, who can be the man to defeat the mighty Sheamus? In turn, would the up and comers affect the standing of the big guns?

Also, if the WWE decide to take the title off Sheamus quickly then how would that affect his character? Would he drop back into the pile of stars like Swagger or Batista or Kane?

With Mania approaching, it should be very interesting to see how the Sheamus story pans out but until more is apparent, questions will continue to be asked regarding the young star and his place in the company. In saying that, how can I write a column regarding the young star? Well, technically I haven’t, I’ve just posed some interesting questions from both sides for you all to consider so a discussion further down would be extremely interesting.

Before I leave, I want to mention the state of the title itself. People have frequently questioned its prestige in recent years and the Sheamus win will undoubtedly have many up in arms because he is still so green. If the WWE handle this well however, we could be on the brink of an interesting time within the company…possibly a way to counter the ever increasing threat of TNA? I’ll tackle that subject next week. Til then… Your Stockwell Superstar of The Week has been Sheamus and i am Daniel Stockwell, signing off.
