The 2020 return of the XFL met an unfortunate end. It started off showing promise, but then the COVID-19 pandemic happened. Vince McMahon’s venture ended abruptly, as the XFL soon went bankrupt. However, it seems someone else has purchased it now.
According to a report by Sportico, it seems the XFL has been sold to a group that includes someone fans are sure to recognize – The Rock. Dwayne Johnson joined together with Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital group and acquired XFL for $15 million. This took place a few hours before an auction that was going to take place for the company.
Johnson, an actor and producer who played college football at the University of Miami, teamed up with Gerry Cardinale’s RedBird Capital to buy the league just hours before a planned auction was scheduled to begin.
It was also reported that the sum was divided evenly and Johnson’s ex wife Dany Garcia is also a stakeholder. RedBird Capital also has previous ties with the NFL.
This is certainly an interesting situation. With The Rock having ownership, we wonder whether we will be seeing another return of the XFL or if he has other plans.
