‘Bones’ Jones overcame a severe toe injury to defeat Sonnen within one round and establish himself as the greatest fighter of all time with multiple title wins. However, his reputation has been sullied due to multiple failed drug tests and two bans from the sport due to alleged use of illegal substances.
As Jones prepares for his first fight in three years, he claims to have been cleared of any wrongdoing and believes there is no longer an asterisk next to his victories.
During a recent interview on The MMA Hour, Sonnen was asked if he believed Jones was clean during their fight a decade ago. He emphatically replied, “No, heavens no. Oh my God. We know our own. I could tell, very easily. It would be the body. It would start with your delts, it would go to your nipples, then it would be the upper abs or the three big tells.”
The 45-year-old Sonnen, who has openly admitted to using performance-enhancing drugs during his career, claims that he recognized that ‘Bones’ Jones was doing the same thing at the beginning of their fight.
According to Sonnen, “I had more juice than Tropicana and he pushed me around like a Mack truck versus a Volvo. As soon as we locked up with each other, as he’s pushing me backwards before he comes with his big spinning elbow, I remember thinking, ‘I know your secret because I got the same one.'”
