Former President Donald Trump has mentioned Texas Gov. Greg Abbott as a potential running mate in the upcoming election cycle. During a visit to the Southern border, Trump referred to Abbott as a “spectacular man” and expressed that he would “absolutely” consider him as a running mate. Trump praised Abbott’s efforts in securing the border and highlighted his endorsement by the Texas governor in late 2023. While Abbott has previously dismissed the possibility of running for national office, Trump emphasized his appreciation for Abbott’s dedication to Texas.

Trump’s visit to the border coincided with President Joe Biden’s tour of Brownsville, Texas. During his visit, Trump also mentioned other potential running mates, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former Rep. Tulsi Gabbard, Sen. Tim Scott, Rep. Byron Donalds, biotech entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy, and South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem. Trump stressed the importance of selecting the right candidate, considering he has only one term left in office.

Abbott has received praise from Trump for his border security efforts, including the installation of wire fencing along the Rio Grande. However, Abbott has previously stated his intention to focus on running for reelection in Texas, with strong support from fellow Texans urging him to stay in the state’s leadership.
