Trump Reveals Mitch McConnell Replacement?

Former President Donald Trump is reportedly encouraging Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) to enter the race to succeed Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) after McConnell’s announced retirement in 2024. Trump’s support for Daines was expressed before McConnell’s retirement announcement, according to sources familiar with a call between the two Republicans.

Daines, who currently leads Senate Republicans’ political campaign arm, acknowledged Trump’s encouragement and expressed gratitude but emphasized his focus on ensuring a Senate Republican majority in the upcoming November elections.

Trump’s endorsement of Daines aligns with his influence within the Republican Party, especially in the context of potential leadership changes. The report suggests that Daines may be favored by the MAGA (Make America Great Again) wing of the Senate, and his early support for Trump in April 2023 distinguishes him from other contenders.

Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX), the current number three Republican, has already announced his bid for leadership, and the MAGA wing is expected to field a candidate to challenge him. Sen. Rick Scott (R-FL), who lost a leadership challenge to McConnell in 2022, has indicated that he will not participate in this leadership race.

While Sen. John Barrasso (R-WY) may consider entering the race and has support from some colleagues, Trump’s endorsement holds weight, particularly in terms of having a relationship with the Republican president.

The report highlights the strategic collaboration between Daines and Trump in selecting candidates for the current election cycle, emphasizing alignment with the MAGA agenda and electoral viability. Trump’s influence in shaping the future leadership of Senate Republicans remains a significant factor in the evolving dynamics of the party.

I just don’t think his opinion makes any difference. And that’s not to discount how formidable he is about his views. It’s just to say ‘Hey, man, here’s who we think is best reflective of the Senate,’” said Sen. Cynthia Lummis (R-WY), who is supporting Barrasso for leader. “Daines is great. But I don’t know if that will matter to Daines or anyone else.”
