Updated card for WWE Battleground

While everyone seems to be focused on Great Balls Of Fire and SummerSlam, SmackDown Live also has Battleground to get through. It’s shaping up to be a pretty good looking show too.

Jinder Mahal vs Randy Orton (WWE Championship Punjabi Prison Match)

Jinder Mahal has made a fine champion so far. He’s being edited as a babyface in India but he’s been a pretty basic heel champion in the United States. Say what you want about The Modern Day Maharaja, but he fits the part. Randy Orton might want to try and dethrone Mahal, but a match with a stipulation like this can have many unpredictable results. One result very well might be Jinder Mahal walking out of Battleground as WWE Champion.

John Cena vs Rusev (Flag Match)

Rusev came back to interrupt John Cena’s homecoming to SmackDown Live. Even though Big Match John is a free agent now he’s still participating in the SmackDown PPV against Rusev in a flag match. Rusev will most likely go over in this match for a couple of reasons. He’s returning from injury and needs to re-establish himself as a dominant force. John Cena can also lose this kind of match without being pinned so it won’t hurt his credibility and Rusev can still boast about the hollow victory.

Kevin Owens vs AJ Styles (United States Championship Match)

Kevin Owens is the New Face Of America and his reign as US Champion has been a good one. He might be holding this title until Chris Jericho can come back and take it from him though. Don’t be surprised to see AJ Styles fail to capture the red, white, and blue belt from KO just yet. Plans could always change but Shinsuke Nakamura might be in AJ Styles’ long-term plans. However, it wouldn’t be surprising to see AJ Styles win the US Title in this one by the way WWE has been booking this program.

The Usos vs The New Day (SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match)

These two teams have had a great time working together so far. Thier rap battle was so good it was too hot for WWE’s YouTube channel and it has been anything but booty. If New Day fails to capture the SmackDown Tag Team Championships here we expect a team like Breezango would love to get in line to challenge them for those titles.

Shinsuke Nakamura vs Baron Corbin and Mike Kanellis vs Sami Zayn are also expected for the show because those rivalries have been teased. There will also probably be a Smackown Women’s Championship match added at some point.

July 23rd looks like it will be a big night for the SmackDown Live brand to say the least.
